2500 ATTEND LAYING OF THE KEELS FOR FIRST DESTROYERS BUILT IN
TEXAS, THE USS AULICK AND THE USS CHARLES AUSBORN
(;ov. W. Lee O'Daniel was principal speaker for the flag
raising ceremonies in front of the administration building
of Consolidated Steel Corporation, Wednesday afternoon
prior to the laying of the keel for the first destroyer to
be built in Texas.
Approximately 2,500 people attended the ceremonies. The
Bengal Lancers led off the program with " Beautiful Texas"
and "Anchors Aweigh", and the Bengal Guards played "Eyes
of Texas."
A.G. Roach, executive vice president of Consolidated
Steel Ltd., introduced the governor and other men of
prominence. With the introduction of Mrs. O'Daniel, he
presented her with a corsage of American Beauty rosebuds.
At the opening of Governor O'Daniel's speech, he read a
telegram he had just received from Governor H.L. Olson of
California congratulating the State of Texas on the occasion.
The representatives of the Lloyd Grubbs Post of the
American Legion who hoisted the American flag near the building
while the Bengal Lancers played"Star Spangled Banner" were:
Sid Caillavet, J.W. Winn, V.T. Bolton, J.W. Thigpen, B' ,:;a
Burton, Charles Cottle, Roy Robinson and Johnnie Stephenson.
Invited guests went through the gates and assembled on
the ways to witness the official laying of the keels for the
"USS Aulick" and the "USS Charles Ausborn", the first two
of 12 United States destroyers to be built in Orange.
Speaking from the ways, Mr. Roach reviewed the history
of the projects and stated that two thirds of the construction
of the shipyard was completed.
He introduced officials and department heads of Bechtel-
Mc'ione-Parsons and the department heads of Consolidated Steel
Corp. Ltd.11
