IN HIS Scout Troop back home Tom was champ
* when it came to the old game of twisting a stick
out of the other fellow's grip. When he went to his
uncle's farm he thought he'd show his cousin Bill a
thing or two. But Bill, his hands toughened by hoe
handles and milking, had a good grip himself. Better
than Tom's. He licked the Troop champ at his own
game. Was Tom surprised! Also annoyed. Bill
couldn't do that to him—not with the ease he did it
the first time anyway. Tom recalled a series of easy
training stunts his Patrol Leader had introduced to
him. The PL called it his 25 cent gym. Tom went
down to the village lumber yard and invested a
quarter in two one-inch dowels, a %-inch dowel
and a block of wood which he hollowed out on two
sides. Then he went into training to toughen his
hands and strengthen his grip. When he was ready
Tom challenged Bill for a return bout and was
more of a match for the farm boy. In fact he beat
Bill a couple of times. Bill became interested in the
twenty-five cent gym Tom had developed. He got
himself some dowels also, and together they worked
out a lot more. Try this method of toughening up
to get your hands ready for work on the farm or
in that Victory Garden of yours this summer. Get
all the members of your Troop to own and use
this simple gym. Develop contests. There's a lot
of fun in it.
