Pops' Presentation
Called Outstanding
H> DONNA JONKS
The dramatic use of thi* percu*-
ion sect inn in both the "Fanfare
of the Common Man" and "Over-
ture Solennelle 1812" made the
University Symphony'* Thursday
niifht concert an outstanding
"Pop*" presentation.
Aaron Copland's "Fanfare," as
directed by Dr George Morey, was
a weird piece that made excellent
use of the trumpets Th? compoai-
tion called for many special effects
in the percussion section, and these
were carried out well.

The "1812 Overture" by Tschai
kovaky was a forceful, dynamic
piece performed with a stereophon
ic effect by placing instrumental
ists at the front and rear of the
auditorium The symphony played
to a rousing finale as the shot of
a gun in a resonator was heard in
the distance.

The program also had other

with her performance on the harp
The composition served as a peace-
ful break between the lively na-
ture of "Roman Carnival Over
ture" by Herlioz and "Colas Hreug
non" by Kahalevsky.
The ability of the string section,
although excellent throughout the
concert, was exceptional during the
John George of Marshall High
School, winner of the North Tex-
as 1'iario Concerto Competition,
played a complicated concerto with
the ease of a professional. "Con-
certo No. 3 in C Major" by Pro-
kofieff combined complicated rhy-
thm patterns and intricate timing
which George managed extremely
well.
In an operatic selection from
"Toaca," Mrs Marlene Ilelavan'a
performance as Toaca and Arley
Reece's portrayal as Cavaradossi
were colorful even without the help
of costumes and scenery The
strength of the performers' voices
was adequate to display the dra-
matic characterization of the two
roles.
The white and black costumes |
of the Grand Prairie High School
Chorus were very impressive, but
the chorus' diction in "Rattle Hymn!
of the Republic" suffered some-1
what by the enthusiastic perform-i
ance of the symphony
Kenneth N. Cuthbert, dean of
the School of Muaic, announced
that George had won a $110(1 schol-
