North Texas' First
Savage Gets AII-MVC Award
HONORED AS THE FIRST North Texas basketball player to ever
make the All-Missouri Valley Conference basketball team is
John Savage. Presenting the award is Dr. Jess E. Cearley, athletic
director.
Presentation of u plaque Tues-
day to North Texas' All-Mis-
souri Valley Conference eager,
John Savage, brought predic-
tions of future greatness for the
6-5 forward and next year's
team from Coach Charles John-
son.
Savage, sophomore from De-
troit, Tex., received the award
from Dr. Jess K. Cearley, ath-
letic director, in recognition of
Savage's being named to the AII-
MVC first team at the close of
the season.
"WE'RE SI HE proud of
John," Coach Johnson com-
mented. "This will give him
something to shoot for again
during the next two seasons."
Savage finished third in the
season scoring race with 50(1
points for a IS'.5 game average
and 11 rebounds per game.
The Eagles will lose only one
starter off the 19(11-62 team.
With the aid of the fine fresh-
man team coming up this year,
they hope to field a winning
team next season.
JOHNSON t'l.ANS to
strengthen his team next year
with several junior college trans-
fers. He said North Texas will
give seven basketball scholar-
ship#, two for junior college men
and live for high school grad-
uates.
Johnson now has his eye on
transfer Bubba Bailey, who
played at San Angelo Junior Col-
lege.
"Bailey is a very good basket-
ball player," Johnson commented.
"He has to finish several courses
at the junior college before he
will be eligible to play here, but
he plans to finish his work there
this summer."
"We should have a better
team next year," Savage pre-
dicted. "We have good strength
with the help of this year's
freshmen. The boys are deter-
mined to have a winning team
next year."

Youth vs. Experience Today
At Fouts as Drills Near End
North Texas' football young-
sters, attempting to wrest start-
ing positions from the veterans,
face their most arduous task this
spring when they scrimmage the
"old-timers" Friday night.
The stern initiation gets under
way at 7:30 p.m. at Fouts Field.
Squad Divided
The football team was divided
into two groups, a Green team ris and Gerry Hawkins, guards,
composed of returning varsity let
termen and squadnien and a White
team whose members are sopho-
moroa-to-be and transfers. A few
minor changes were made to bal-
ance some positions.
Probable starters for the Greens
are Mike Pirkle and Winston Free-
man at ends, Bobby Price and Her
bert Schulr.e, tackles; Richard Far-
and Mack Cope, center.
James Littlepage and Bill Me-
Watters seem the only sure start-
ers in the Green backfield. Coach
Odus Mitchell doubts if Bobby
Smith's shoulder injury will heal
in time to play. If not, Butch
Wright may start.
Toss a < din
The quarterback position is also
unfilled. "We may just have to
toss a coin to see who starts,"
Mitchell said.
The expected starting lineup for
the Whites will be Carl Lock hart
and Tooker Lisle at ends. Cotton
Moore and Alton Crum, tackles;
Wayne I'lmer and Larry Thomas,
guards; and Dave Woodward, cen-
ter,
In the backfield. A. D. Whitfield,
still looking good according to
Coach Mitchell, will probably
start at fullback Peter Linek and
Don Viekers should In- the half-
backs but Dwain Bean may divide
time between fullback and half
back,
Mitchell was also uncertain
about the probable starter at quar-
terback for the Whites.
