LEXINGTON KY. March 16. A
party of night riders made an attempt
early to day to burn the tobacco barn
ot Judge Lewis Apperson ot SIdevIew
Montgomery county early this morn-.
Ing. The blaze started In two places
but the Are was discovered and extin-
guished by members of Judge Appor-
Bon's household beforo It obtained
much of a start.
As soon as the Are had been put out
Investigation of tho source was made
with the result that bottles filled with
coal oil wero found and tracks of men
discovered. Immediately bloodhounds
were put on these tracks and if pos-
sible tho men who are thought to bo
night riders will bo captured.
The people in the country districts
where most of the outrages are being
committed are becoming Incensed be-
yond the point of endurance. They say
they wil organize themsolves into
borne guards and personally wage war
upon the night riders.

Earlier in the afternoori McKinnoy
in company with Jesse Calvin had
driven to tho park. After circling the
park a few times the two hitched the
horse and for a time sat near tho dam
and talked. While Calvin was unhitch-
ing the horse preparing to renew tho
drive ho heard his friend exclaim
"Well Jesse I'll take one more drink
and then I am done"
Calvin looked around to see Mc-
Klnney lift the bottlo to his mouth and
swallow the contents. Perhaps a hun-
dred people were standing near when
tho deed was done. "
McKinney's action was deliberate
and for several months he had threat
ened to end his life. Jesse Calvin a
few weeks ago snatched a bottle out
of his hand and thwarted an attempt
at suicide. -One year ago McKinney's
first wlfo committed suicide in the
same manner. He had been married
to the present Mrs.. McKlnney onyl a
few weeks.
McKinnoy had livqd In Fort Worth
most of his life. Ho was a laborer
and was at the tlmo of his death em
ployed In a cold storage house. He
resided on South Jennings avenue. Ho
Is survived by aw Ifo one child a fa-
ther mother and three brothers all
living in this city.
The inquest was held by Justice
Maben after whloh tho body wbb turn-
ed over to Undertaker L P. Robert-
son to bo prepared for burial.

CHATTANOOGA TENN. March 15.
James Johnson capitalist and lead
ing politician of this city committed
suicide by cutting his throat on an Ala-
bama Great Southern train tonight be
tween this city and Birmingham. The
body will reach here at 9:40 p. m.
Mr. Johnson had been In Now Or
leans accompanied by his wlfo and
baby. Last night he was taken ill and
stopped over In Birmingham. During
tho night ho took an overdoso of strych
nine but this morning ho was so far
recovered he continued his Journoy
homeward.
When tho train was between Whit
ney and Caldwoll Aln. Mr. Johnson
Jeft his wlfo and went to the lavatory.
In a few moments he was found dead
with his throat cut tho Jugular vein
being sevorcd by a very small pocket-
knife. Ho was carried to hid Beat Jn
tho couch and within five minutes dlod
In his wife's arms.
Mr. Johnson was president of the
Forest Hills Cemetery company and
was a largo holder of realty in this
city.

BAIRD March 16. A disastrous
flro occurred at this placo this morn-
ing at two thirty o'clock destroying
tho City Hall Flro Department Lodge
rooms of tho Knights of Pythias and
other fratornltles and tho homo of a
Mrs. Cunningham.
It Is not known exactly what caused
tho fixe though It did It is thought
catch first In tho headquarters of the
flro department In tho back of tho
building occupied by tho City Hall of-
fices. Many things in the flro depart
ment Including some new hosp which
had boon used but once were quickly
destroyed. This placed to naught tho
efforts which might havo been exerted
on tho part of tho firemen.
The City Hall went next and with It
a great many valuable records and
other papers. Some of these however
wero saved. Tho cjty hall with the
upstairs occupied by several lodges
was a brick building owned by the
town Of Paird It originally cost about
$6000.
The homo of a Mrs Cunningham
living next tho City Hall was also
destroyed. Tho furniture In this homo
however was saved.
It all It Is thpught tho damage In
property will reach $12000 partially
covered by Insurance. A ladles lodgo
also lost a new piano.
Valiant work was done by a num
ber of citizens who formed themselves
Into a bucket brigade. Their efforts
kept tho flames from spreading to oth-
er buildings.
It was learned today that a hose
cart and five hundred feet of hoso came
in from Abilene this morning; also
that aid had been sent from Cisco.

NEW YORK March 14. In accord
ance with tho decree of Popo Plus X
of last AugUBt Archbishop' Farloy sent
a letter today to the rectors of all tho
Catholic churches in this city explain-
ing tho now marriage law that will go
Into effect at Eastor. It will bo read
at all massed tomorrow.
In tho main tho decree prohibits
civil marrlago for Catholics and de-
clares unions In tho church on and
after April 19 Invalid if either the
brido or bridgegroom Is not a Catholic
Tho following changes nro mado in the
marrlago legislation of tho church:
1. No marriage will bo valid unless
It is performed by a priest duly au-
thorized and boforo at least two wit-
nesses. 2. A marrlago performed between
..two Catholics or between a Cath-
olic and a baptized non-Catholic
by a civil magistrate alderman
notary public or Protestant minister
will bo null and void. Hitherto such
marriages were valid.
3. Nq marriage will be licensed un
less It is performed by tho pastor of
the bride or by a priest delegated by
him or the blshbp of the diocese.
4. Those of thq faith who aro- of
marriageable ago or may contemplato
marriage in tho future should secure
posftlvo and correct information as to
tho date and placo of their baptism.
