WIDENING THE FIELD
MAKING GREATER OPPp.TTUNITY
FOR .SONS OF FARMER8.
BUILDING UP THE HOME TOWN
Some Cause for Complaint Which
Can Be Obliterated by - the
United Efforts of the
People.
How often do wo hoar It said -that
tho young man has not tho opportun-
ity that tho young man of a scoro of
years ago had. How great Is tho com.
plaint of trusts and combinations
which control industries to tho detri-
ment of the smaller ones In business
nnd how ofton Is roforonco made to
business concentration In tho largo
cities at the cost of tho smallor
towns. -
Innovations In business methods
have been many. It may bo said that
this Is an ora of economical methods;
that ovolutlon Is going on continually
broadening the field for Individual
effort and making posslblo tho opera-
tion of mammoth enterprises. Thoro
can be no doubt as to tho detrimental
effects upon small towns of this busi-
ness concentration in tho largercitioa
Pessimists deplore the lack of oppor-
tunity for tho young mon of to-day.
At tho same time tho largo corpora-
tlons put rorth the cry that thoro Is a
tm"1' Ul "" l'B"1 '"u "l """
iur MiJiJuriujii jjiuueD ui uutik auw-
ever this may be there Is one thing
ovident and that is small towns being
kept from advancing narrows tho
field for tho young men who would
otherwiso enjoy an opportunity to on-
gago in business. ...
Traveling to the largo city for em-
ployment the youth perhaps seeks a
clerkship at moderate wages. Thero
are thousands of others that ho must
compete with in the race for success.
His field is narrowed. It is not ofton
that ho has fair competition and fa-
voritism he finds Is one of tho obstruc-
tions ln his way. Ono of tho euros
for this condition is to d6vlse means
of enlarging the scopo and importance
of the so-called country towns.
There Is no economical reason 'why
the large city should have tho busi'
ness that rightfully belongs to tho
small town. There is no saving in
buying goods at a distant point even
though a small percentage may bo
saved directly
Whenever a resident
of a community sends his money to
some otheF community for the neces-
sities that he requires ho robs his
own home town of a certain amount
of business. Employment is given to
the people of tho largo city Instead of .
the people of tho local community.
It has been estimated that more
than CO per cent of the trade goes
from some communities to larger
cities. If this trade were given to tho
home town It would immediately dou-
ble its business importance and give a
corresponding Increase in employment
for tho people. This meanB that the
population of tho town would be in-
creased and the opportunity for en-
gaging in business would be greater.
Not only this but It Is an established
principle that values of farm lands to
a great extent are dependent upon tho
activity of the town near which tho
farms may bo located. Thus it is
plain that if the sons of farmers
would have greater opportunities open
to them for engaging In business it
can be Increased by closely adhering
to the home trado and home protec-
tion principle which widens tho local
field for Individual effort ln a business
way.
HELPS FOR TOWN BUILDERS.
Strangers to a town form their
opinions as to Its peoplo by the ap-
pearance of the business places and
the residences. In a town whoro tho
buildings aro dingy and dirty and tho
show windows of the stores arocarc-
lessly arranged It Is ovldenco that
thero is a lack of enterprise It payB
tho business men of a town to bo care-
ful as to tho exterior appearances of
their placos of business.
Small towns usually contain but fow
expensive residences. It matters llttlo
how inexpensively built residences aro
if the buildings aro kept well painted
and tho yards neat and clean. This
is evidence of tho good tasto of tho
peoplo.
In many towns In country districts
thero aro hitching posts placed hero
and thpro beforo tho stores. It Is gen-
erally the case that whoro tho hltch-i
Ing post is found unless tho street is
woll pavpd thero Is a mud hole.
Every town that Is Incorporated
should have regulations as tonUio
placing of hitching posts indiscrimin-
ately in tho BtrCetB Thoro' should bo
sot asldo Bomo side stroot that la con
venient to tho business portion of the
town whoro tho farmers and othors
can hitch their toams Instead of in
front of tho stores
'
Good sidewalks giro tho strangers
to a town a favorable Impression of
tho place and also they are an advan-
tage In many ways and may prove a
matter of economy through tho pre-
vention of accidents that might glvo
cauiio for damago against the town
corporation
Nearly every amall town has its
public park. It is often noticed that
these parks aro little cared for Thoy
are public pastures and servo no good
purpose as places where tho peoplo
of tho town can meet evenings for
social Intercourse. Peoplo of towns
should take pride In keoping tho pub-
lic parks in' good condition They caa
