"Good nftornoon Miss." Don't you
want to "
"No I clpn't want anything- How
dnro you speak to mo?"
"I'm sure you will extiUBe mo Hut
don't you want to-: '
"No. I don't wanU-anythlng. Is
that plain? And If you annoy me fur-
ther I will call tho officer."
"Well before jou do or I do don't
you want to see tho manager?"
The very elegantly garhbed young
woman as slender na alio was haugh-
ty In tho graceful curves of "her prln-
cobs gown standing In front of tho
great department store with her fawn
colored auto cloak over her arm and
her auto Itself attended by the obse-
quious chauffeur waiting at the curb
stared for a single brief lnstanco In-
to the steely penetrating eyes of tho
well dressed man who 'fold accosted
her.
O'oh yes th-thank you. Perhaps I
do."
And with the corner policeman
whom she had threatened to call
exchanging a friendly wink with her
Insistent escort behind her princess
back she turned to re-Inter the
store.
A rich and presentable girl ten
minutes previously the pet wnrd of
tho city's guardians In her walks and
rides now she was a shoplifter
caught in the act of crime affrlghted-
ly on her way to punishment.
DIshoia3t? iNot at all until 'ten
minutes ago. Dishonest now? Not In
the least although five minute hence
her arms only then released from
tho apparently gallant hold by which
tho polite store dotectlve clips the
motar coat tightly lest she drops from
Its folds the laces It conceals she will
be a confessed thief wildly hysteri-
cal.
Until her Identity Is fully assured
the vigilant detective will not be pos-
itive -whether he has pinched a new
and gorgeous "professional and so ac-
quire much glory or has merely res-
cued $20 worth 61 Irish pojnt and
himself as it Is worth.
For this Is tho way of the shoplifter
when after the years of sporadic de-
velopment and chance discovery and
arrest she has ovoluted Into speciali-
zed types and classes all duly sched-
uled and all duly handled as part of
tho routine of the great modern
store.
Time -was wheu every shoplifter of
tho Unlted.States was known by proto-
graph and Intimate 'description to ev-
ery city detective In the country.

But times have changed. Tho mod-
ern professional is dressed as fash-
ionably as tho haughty shopper who
Is tearfully submitted to the lntlmnto
and highly Impertinent searching of
lier clothing and person that is be-
ing mado by tho modern stores woman
specialist.
Olvo hor a skin -tight sheath gown
a Charlotte Cordny trimmed hat with
roses blanches and her favorite trav-
eling hag and sho will llvo llko a
baroness where her prototype subsis-
ted llko a beggar.
It may bo Interesting to know that
the bag has a hinged bottom opening
upward and Inward So that set down
upon a lot of- goods piled upon tho
counter for hor predatory lady's In-
spection sho can fumble Inside of It
and gather up $100' worth of plunder
In a minute.
Or her best-liked ruBe In 1908
leave her nothing moro. than a loose
cpat and wrap over hor pretty round-
ed arm with her delicately modeled
hand lying. Innocently and Immova-
bly on the goods befo'ro ydur very
ees while the other holds up for in
spection the articles as you put them
before her.
Uses Decoy Hand.
Tho tricky little slnnor has three
hands Instead or two. It Is the third
or perfectly tinted wax which plays
before your eyes the passive role of
companion to the genuine ono that
takes the goods as you show them.
The other real hand Is busy under
cover of the wrap In gathering up
tho articles the wrap conceals.
It takes four men detective and as
many women to guard the average
department store In dull times; It
tnkes five 'times that force In the
late fall when the Christmas crowds
are pouring In.
Usually some one among the execu-
tive managers makes 'the detective
Service a special detail of his work
and almost Invariably he values his
women Vfdocqs more highly than the
men.
Of all store detectives the best are
the humble unconsidered saleswomen.
To them belongs the credit of pre-
vention now universally esteemed by
store managers-as Infinitely prefera-
ble to captirest
Underneath the seemingly careless
array of articles on her counter the
salesgirl preserves constantly an or-
der of arrangement that would honor
an experienced jeweler showing his
gems. Her first foe is the shoplifter;
but her second la tho store detec-
tive. Company

Tho storo detectives with Iholr In-
cradlcnblo ambition to mako records
for themselves In triumphant arrests
sho hates with an abiding dread for
ovory arrest that exalts 'thorn discred-
its them. Between tho two protections
tho number of larcenies is kept at
tho minimum.
Danger In Mistake.
'Yet the ordinary department storo
of a largo city escapes with lower
than forty or fifty captures a month.
And every ono Is a prima faclo evi-
dence of guilt detected in the net
and caught with tho goods A mis-
take would cost tho management $50-
000 In civil damages.
Wherever It Is possible tho arrest'
Is effected outsldo of tho storo and
then with tho utmost quietness. Such
notoriety Is advertising of tho kind
whfch tho department store past
master in advertising's wondorful art
most ardently inbhors
Tho propofsslonal whenever caught
Is prosecuted to the cxtremo oxtent
of tho law.' As for tho impulsive
kleptomaniac weak femininity's etor-
nal blessing in the doctor who coined
tho word some thirty years ago.
"Madam" the Btcely eyed detective
Is saying to the occupant of that beau
tlful princess gown so recontly doff-
ed and moro recently resumed "we
are .satisfied It Is your first offense.
But we must have your signature to
this confession In order to safeguard
the store from any resentment you
may later seek to satisfy.' A
The glimmer of hope that lights
her still wet eves 13 accompanied by
a gleam of that very revolt and resent-
ment which he so accurately foresaw.
. "A confessibn! I L sign a con-
fession !"
'Would you" sauvely considerate.
"Care to call up your father so
that he can arrange ball wjille we are
sending for the police patrol?"
"Oh! Oh my don't don't do that.
I'll sign I'll sign:- Oh please let
me sign won't you?"
"Thank -you very much" A little
gentle silence while the confession
goes Into the safe. Then'. We are so
glad that it was an oversight that you
merely neglected to pay for your pur-
chase.' The price tag was marked
$20. These sales arp cash you know."
"Oh thank you so much. Yes I
have the money Ith me."
At the curb making way for the
attentive chaffeur no French count
bidding his eloquent au revolr to an
American million could excel the
store detective's bow.
