BUILDING A COMPLETE LOSS
Firemen Lnld Over Thirteen Hundred
Feet of Hose; House and Furni-
ture Loss Fully Covered Jy
" Insurance.
This morning shortly boforo the
hour of Blx tho neighborhood around
tho Christian Collego In tho west part
of town was awakened by tho sound1
of pistol shots closely followed by
the clanging of the fire bell With that
miraculous quickness with which peo-
pie can repair to tho Bceno of a blaze
a largo crowd was on tho scene to
find tho home occupied by Charles T.
Matkin on North First street and Prcs-
ton Avenue In flames.
A reporter was among tho first to
reach the scene' and at that time tho
roof Was In full blaze and the building
apparently doomed. When tho firemen
arrived tho structuro was past aHjh?Ui-
Nevertheless tho flreboys set to w&fit
with a will to save the homo of their
. former Captain and although forced
to lay over thirteen bundled feet of
hose did good work In checking the
flames.
The building itself was entirely des-
troyed. It had gained too great head-
way bef-jre U e alarm was turne din.
It was stated teat several members of
th-a Math'ii fi-mily were asleep while
tho roof was In a blaze and had to be
roused. Some of their household ef
fects Including the piano were saved
l)ut the greater portion of the furniture
went up in the flames with the house.
Origin Unknown.
.No one seems to know how the Are
started. Mr. Matkin was Interviewed
and stated that he had no idea of the
origin.
''I was asleep when It started" said
Mr. Matkin "and was waked by the
mell of smoke. I rushed down stairs
Into the yard and found the entire roof
on the north side "blazing. Someone
emptied a six shooter in the neigh-
borhood after which I we.it back into
the house and turned in the alarm."
The" building belonged to a Mr. Ma-
lono of Seminole In Gaines county who
it is understood carried Insurance to
cover the loss fully. Mr. Matkin also
Kried insurance on the furniture
which was lost The total loss will It
Is estimated reach about threo thous-
and doHoiSjjjosslbly more.
The Matkin family have taken up
temporary abode with neighbors. They
have the sympathy of their friends In
their disaster.
Need of FJro Plug.
A fire plug Is sorely needed in the
-west section of town which Is rapidly
becoming settled. When one stops to
consider that the hose was laid for
over thirteen hundred feet or all the
way from Grape street It will bo read
ily seen the need of another fire main
to cover that portion of tho city about
the Christian college. When the hose
was finally laid the pressure was al-
most too weak to throw tho water to
the roof of tho two story structure.

wealthy business man of Dallas
whoso annual volumo of business Is
said to amount to several millions of
dollars occupied tho pulpit of tho
First Baptist church Sunday morning
at tho 11 o'clock preaching hour and
made one of tho most uplifting inspir-
ing and helpful talks over heard in
Abilene.
God's Fiimnclnl Plan
"Ood's Financial Plan" was Mr.
Wolf's subject and tho substance of
his splondlddlscourso on that subject
is as follows:
When tho businoss man gots out ot
tho pow and gets on tho platform ho
usually gots scared and nervous and
that might be the coso with mo but
hero and there In tho congregation I
see familiar faces and Urtraw courage
and Inspiration from them. I Avould
feel further embarrassed by occupying
the preacher's place had It not been
that the preachers aald to mo concern-
ing this talk "Do tho best you can and
we will hold up your hands."
I have been Whore you businoss men

&ro meeting r know" where you live
and can talk to you about your bus-
iness and everyday life l am not hero
to mnko a speech nor to preach a ser-
mon but to talk to you about God'B
financial plan.
Two Great Propositions
As I look upon tho Book this morn-
ing I think of two great business prop-
ositions It contains; thoy aro business
propositions as I seo them from a
business mah's standpoint.
The first Is salvation; thnt comes
from God. Tho second Is consecra-
tion; that comes from man.
"For God so loved the world thnt
Ho gave His only begotten Son that
whosoever bolleveth on Him might
have everlasting life." I heard that
when I was a very small boy sitting
by my mother's kneo in our ltttlo cabin
home far out of tho range of a
preacher's voice. As piothor told mo
tho story I thought It was tho swootost
story that I had over heard an It has
grown sweeter and sweetor day by
day over since.
But It is tho cpnsecratlon proposi-
tion that I wish to talk to you about
this morning; not tho consecration of
your llfo but ot your monoy God
says: 3rlng yq all tho tithes into tho
store'houso that there may bo meat In
mlno house and prove mo now horo-
wlth If I will not opon you tho win-
dows of heaven and pour you out a
blessing that there shall not bo room
enough to receive It."
You nro to roallzo manifold more
not next week not next month not
noxt year not over on tho other shore
but In tho present timo today. You
blunder Jf you believe that you will
havo to wait till you get to1 tho Now
Jerusalem to get returns from your
Investments In tho work of tho Lord.
Men havo put God to the tost On H1b
promise to give immediate returns for
money put Ipto His work and they
have found Him over ready to fulfill
the promise.
Let Us See
Let us see if God will do what He
says Ho will in regard to theso man-
ifold returns Tako tho experience of
Editor Ford of tho Youth's Compaulon
Ho established a Httlo printing plant
and decided at onco to consecrate It to
God Ho promised God that If lie
would aljow him to prosper ho would
glvo Him one-tonth of what ho made.
Ho prospered and nt the ond of the
first year he fell upon his knees
thanked the Lord and mado other
pronvUes. He promised God that If
ho were allowed to reach a certain
figure he would give one-fifth of It to
the Lord. At the end of the second
year the figure he named had been
reached m then he set another fig
ure and made Odd the promt to glvs
Him ono-fourth of tho prbnts It that
figure was reachod
And so on at tho end of each year
Editor Ford named a figure going
higher and higher each year and also
higher and hlghor with that part ot
it he would glvo to God until ho fin-
ally placed his aim so high that he
thought ho would surely plnco his fig-
ures out of tho Master's reach and
said "O Lord allow mo to do thnt
much business this yonr and I will
glvo you thrco-fourths of it." Ho mado
it .and ho gavo hla thrco-fourths to tho
Lord. But thnt was not all. no named
nnothor figure high up Into the thous-
ands nnd told God that If his business
ronched that figure thnt year ho would
glvo It all to Him.
Tho figure wns reached and Editor
Ford gavo It nil to' God. And ho con-
tinued to prospor and do a great work
and ho moved tfow England ns no oth-
er had moved that section of country
for years. '
Present proof
Tho Master throws down tho chnl-
longo and says "Try nm ami see." I
can glvo you an Illustration of what
Ho will do for you if you do try Him
by giving you tho experience of a mnn
ngnt here In this chinch today He
started Into businoss In n little Texas
town with only $700. Ho adopted tho
plan of giving God one-tenth of his
profits and ho prosporcd. At tho end
of the first year be. had made sq much
that he opened n second store And
now ho has been in business fourteen
years arid has fourteen stores tho re-
sult of his giving to the Lord One-tonth
of what ho mado.
Thnt was God's financial plan. If
you don't believe It you try Him and
provo Him.
And I have another Illustration. It
embarrasses mo to toll you my own
experience I would not stand hero
nud toll you my own experience to
snvo my good right nrm no not for
my Ufa would T get up before you and
toll you what I am going to toll you
for any other purpose than to show
you the goodness of God
H's Own Expcrlenco
When I first went Into business I
gavo to tho Lord just as many other
Christian businoss men do in a hap-
hazard way and didn't know how
much I was giving nnd dldu't prospor
much. But thorp came- a change 1 was
taken dbwn sick with typhoid and was
nigh unto death. Tho doctors camo to
see mo nnd wont awny shaking their
neads. Tho good peoplo gathered In
tho Httlo church around tho corner
anu prnyou ror mo. And I prayed for
myself and I said to Him thnt if Ho
would suffer mo to recover I would go
whero ho wanted mo to go and do
what Ho wnnted mo to do and that I
would always give one-tenth ot whnt 1
mado to Him.
I recovered and began to proqpor as
soon ns t got back to my business.
Tho business grow until my first yonr's
profits woro $3000. I gavo tho Lord
$300. Tho second yonr I cleared
$0000 and gavo tho Lord $G0O; tho
third year $11000 tho fourth $26000
and tho Lord got $1100 nnd $2500.
Then I told Him If Ho would permit
mo to clear $50000 tho fifth yonr I
would glvq him ono-flrth of it. I clear-
ed $50000 and gave Him $10000. And
my- business has increased wntll It
nmountB to millions each year but I
have never forgotton God and He gets
a tonfh of all tho profits if you don't
bollovo Him try Him '
Hnven't Tried Iflni
Hundreds of business men thjlhlc
that God has nothing to dp with their
business. Thoy think thnt tho only
thing God pays nny attention to on
earth Is tho salvntlon of men's souls.
Tho trouble wjth them Is that thoy
haven't tried Him. Tho Infidel says
thore Is no Christ; ho linsn't tried
Christ. Tho atheist snys thOro Is no
hereafter; he hasn't tried tho hereafter
and the businoss man who thinks ho
enn get along nil right without God in
his business is suffering with tho snhio
complaint; ho has not tried God in his
business
And what becomes of tho man who
thinks ho can get along without God
In his business? We find H hero; i
this-Book. If I don't find It thore 1
will not say nnythlng about IL Here
Is what tho Book saj-B about tho man
