"Tho wholo people aiu beginning to
feel thai aoniattilNK must bo dono to
Hwko country Hfo m progressive ef-
fective And permanently antisfyluK R
city Hfo Wo cannot bo a great peo-
ple la ono half of our Bocloty la moro
-highly developed than tho othor."
Thus doclarod Prof.Ij. II Bailey of
the country Ufo comnilBBlon appointed
y PrcBltlont Roosovolt jihorlly before
.the expiration of his. term In nn ad-
dress before tho Sangcrttold Country
7ub hcrp. Prof. Ilnlley outlined tho
program which ho thought should bo
followed in obtaining thd desired end.
"Tho BO-callcd country Ufo movc-
-mcrtt 1b a Blowly forming opinion that
something really fundamental must
be done-to put rural society where It
'belongs" continued Prof. Bailey. "To
.make farming profitable Is no longer a
question of merely raising moro pro-
duct. Wo now have knowledge and
experience enough to enablo us great-
ly to Incroaao our yield if only wo
put tho knowedgo Into practice
Farmer Doesn't Get Ills Share.
"But tho farmer speaking broadly
dotiB not get his Bhare of tho proceeds
of his labor notwithstanding the in-
crease In tho price of the product."
After Btatlng that he recognized the
service of the middleman to society
although ho said that there 1b hardship
amd injustice to the producer In much
.of the present system tho speaker
.declared that we are under obligations
as to public men to seo that these dis-
criminations are removed.
"Tho middleman question" hQ con-
tinued "cannot be solved by any com-
bination of farmers 'because it is not
an agricultural question. It is as
much a problem for consumers as for
producors. But the abuses must be
checked and ttfe middleman brought
-under some means of control."
Professor Bailey then declared that
"lt Is Just as much tho business of the
government to protect its people from
the raplcity of dishonest and tyrrnn-
-nous middlemen as from other abufc-
ss.
VMU Should bo Corrected
The speaker then declared that "the
present agitation ought to compel con-
gress to pass a law to correct tho evils
and the organizations then should
teep such touch on the situation that
.the laws will bo enforced.
"But the enactment of a law oven a
good law Is only another step In the
solution There are three steps in
the control of tho middleman. 1st An
aroused public conscience on the ques-
tion; 2nd a good fundamental law
or Interstate phases; 3rd good com-
missions or other bodies to which any
producer of consumer or any middle-
man may take his case.
"I look for the'present agitation to
awaken tho government to the neces
sity of doing what it is piainiy iw
duty to do."

POTOSI ITEMS
AU tho farmers and northern al-
together have the blues for there Is
other pebbles on the beach. Yes it
is dry and hot out in this part of the
country. Well thought you had a big
rain a fow- daj'B ago. Well- It did rain
a light flood here on a small place
hero and the water ran Into tho lake
at Abilene and the Abilene people
got more good out of it than wo did.
Seems that it was so dry and the
earth so hot and only a small territory
that it rained on didn't do much
good except to make stock water.
fWell you couldn't tell now that it
ruiueu ui uw.
Rev. Stewart of Clyde Is holding a

THE CONTROL OF DISEASE FLIES
MOSQUITO AND RAT ARE
DISEASE BEARERS
From the Youth's Companion:
It Is well sometimes to pause and
take bearlugs with regard to the pro-
blems of health and Blckness. With
the many wonderful discoveries tho
serums the Immunities and the im-
proved knowledge of hygenlo what is
tho situation today? There aro plenty
of statistics' which although they can-
not lie do not always tell thoutruth. It
Is known that although many diseases
are wiped out and many others doom
ed to extinction at a near day thero
are other disorders ominously on the
Increase.
Typhoid fever ono ot the most dread
ed of physical ills is now positively
known to be due to polluted drinking
water or milk or other food or to bo
spread from house to house through
tho agency of the fly.
Yellow fever and malaria are no
longer regarded as visitations of tho
will of heaven but aro recognized' as
duo to the "visitations of the mosquito;
and It is not really necessary to have
thoso mosquttos although it may take
some tlmo and hard work to get rid
of them.
Diphtheria still rears Us head but
it is no longer formidable since the
anti-toxin for it has been found
Tuberculosis is still too" common
and the destruction ot It will mean toll
and caro for humanity for years to'
come but the work Is well under way
Tho great start was made when this
dread disease was; moved by common
consent from the "fatal" to tho "curn-
blo" cases.
When this has opco been done in
regard to human ill It is then for
humanity to take caro of itself.
Thoso nations that aro willing to
spend tho most money and take tho
most pains to wlpo out disease are
coming out first In tho race. Great
cities have learned tho lesson that it
pays them to take caro of tho health
of their populations. It is much too
expensive to permit unnecessary sick
ncss. Clean water pays clean streets
pay" decent housing for tho poor pay.
The boards ot health aro doing
much in theso directions and In many
others nnd ns time goes on they will
do moro. As peoplo aro educated in
those matters they will bo willing and
able to glyo more and wiser co-operation.
It is safo to prophesy that tho
day Is coming when peoplo will re-
fuse to put up with preventable nui-
sances and when the house fly tho
mosquito and the ranT1i extinct;
and whon It peoplwant to lfaowany
thing about tulferculoalB. .uwy will
have to read gfout It lvijlt)0a.
