J HEAVY DAMAGE

Flro breaking out nt tho C. S. Loo
Grain & EltfValor company. Second
nnd Plum streets early Wednesday
night rtbout 0 o'clock caused a loss
estimated at between $8000 and $10-
000 and for a tlmo threatened to de-
stroy adjoining property on account
of tho great headway which tho blaze
had uaincd When tho alarm was turn-
ed In
Tho origin of tho flro wan unde-
termined Thursday morning. It was
stated by some pooplo that an explo-
sion; was heard beforo tho flames burst
out and another theory was that a tiro
may httVo been smouldering thero for
Bomo days. The blazo was ono of tho
most spectacular In tho history of tho
city. - Tho flames leaped Up-Through
tho shaft In tho big olovator and
burst out of the windows at tho top
lighting up tho country for miles
around. People residing In tho coun-
try for several miles declared that
they could geo tho reflection of tho
fire.
Tho elevators at their highest point
aro 110 foot and aro built of concrete
having been constructed hero somo D
to G yenrs ago. Tho elevators are de
clared not to havo boon materially!
damaged and that they can bo used
when repairs aro made.
An excellent water pressure was a
great aid to tho firemen In checking
tho flames. All availablo hoso was
pressed into scrvlpo and at ono tlmo
four streams were being played on
tho fire. Tho firemen put up a valiant
fight and becau&o of tho fact that the
water pressure was perhaps tho best
ever peon hero and duo to their prompt
efforts in getting connections made
they wcrp ablo to hold the flames
to the storage bins and elevators Tho
building in which a greater part of
thq flour and other commodities were
stored was not damaged.
At one tlmo tho water pressure was
of such strength that firemen played
the water to tho top window of one of
the elevators a distance of 11C feet.
Ono tqurtd of firemen had a narrow
oscapo when a portion of tho stoiagc
bin collapsed.
Estimated. Enss
C. S. Xco estimated that tho loss Jo
tho storage bin would amount to ap-
proximately $4000. with tho loss cov-
ered by insurance. There was no
grain In tho stoiago bin. Thero wero
2000 bushels of grain In' tho head-
house and tho exact amount of dam-
ago thero had not been determined
Thursday morning. It wag consider-
ed probablo that there may bo a con-
siderable loss there on account of wat-
er damage. The cleaning machine
considered the most Important part
of tho machinery was not damaged
and it was stated by Mr. Leo that tho
company thereby escaped a much se-
verer loss.
There was no Insurance carried on
tle elevator the loss being estimated
at around $2500 A further investi-gat-ori
into the loss was being made
Thursday mornirig. A roadster be-

Taylor will lecture.
To dato thero havo been 120 addi-
tions to tho First Baptist church with
several joining other churches In tho
city.
In discussing "homo" Wednesday
night Mr. Taylor declared that ho had
traveled throughout England and
Continental Europe that ho had seen
many of tho beauty spots of tho
world but that homo Is tho best placo
ho has over been. Ho said that It
takes three things to mako a real
homo: Tho right kind of paronts tho
right kind of children nnd Jesus
Christ. Pleading for narentlal re
spect nnd control In tho homos of tho
country tho evangelist declared that
parents should know when and where
their children go recalling tho fact
that not far from Abljono two girls
wore thrown from an automobile at
two o'clock in tho morning and seri-
ously injured. Tho girls wero taken
to a hospital and two-hundred and
sixty-flvo parents called to seo if they
wero their daughters. ""Think of 'it
that many west Texas mothors who
did not know whoro their daughters
wero at two o'clock In tho morning."
It was shown tho children always
suffer from disobedience and tho ser-
mon was closed with a strong appeal
to every ono present to make Jesus
their friend and to tako him into tho
hOmo as a constant companion and
fiicnd. Two persons accepted tho in
vitation to confes-s Clirjat and Join tne
church at tho oioJo of Jtno services.

ery cloud has a silver lining and tho
management found that "Peacock Al-

the Express Office in Abilene. Since
Tijosday was such a disagreeable day
and a great many patrons missed see-
