CULLEN THOMAS LEADS.
It is gratifying to the frietuU of Culleu F. Thomas
to n. te that he itatuls prominently at the head of
the lit in the race for a place in the Timed States
Senate. This fact is being rt fleeted from every lo-
cality in the state. Men of prominence in every com
uuinity stand firm in their suport of C'ullcn F.
'Ihotuas. drclaring him to be a real champion of
progressive constructive ami righteous govern-
ment. Mich a representative as even the incompara-
ble Texas may be proud to have as the years come
and go.
The jieople of Texas have stood for years back
of Senator (."harles A. Culberson. They have loved
him and they love him to this date but they realize
tluit their affection for an erstwhile irrcat man
should no longer lead them into the un.speakable
folly of contuiurng in a capacity for which he has
not the physical powers rcquied in performance of
such duties. The pcttple of Texas deplore the pass-
ing of Senator Culberson they realize that he has
bten a tower of strength in the days past but this
does not constitute physical and mental power and
hff are demanded in performance such as this
state has the riKht to expect and demand from her
representatives.
In suprt of the statement that Cullen F.
Thomas is at the head of the list of aspirants is of
fered the following press dispatch out of Washing-
ton and printed in the Texas press on the. 24th of
March :
"Kvery Texas congressman receives a great deal
of majl daily a sal it is natural to suppose that some
of that mail is from people in Texas who mention
something about the senatorial race down there.
"Proceeding upon that theory an informal can-
vass was made as to what views the writers of
such letters reflect.
"l!y far the larger number seem to be of the opin-
ion that Thomas occupies at present the command-
ing position; some seeming to believe he will se-
cure close to a majority of all votes cast in the first
primary.
"Senator Cullwrson is invariably mentioned with
sympathy and many expressed regrets that he
should undertake to run again feeling that during
the next six years at least Texas will require a
vigonus fighter ami that the Dermcratic party willfn 'l Mnf
. . Jwera to have a lovely outln
ne in neei ot every ounce 01 pny.ucai ana mental
energy it can gather.
"May field was seldom mentioned; but when it did
occur it was with a cordhi expression of friendli-
ness. "Tbe others did not appear to figure very much
!in the contest in the minds of the letter writers.
apparently.
"It must of course be understood that the
writers of the letters form such an infinitesimally
small proportiop of the voters of Texas that their
opinions may count for raothing. 1 '
Friends o( Mr. Thomas in Amarillo. In the Pan-
handle and lauis of Texas do not claim for him
that be is the only worthy man who is in this race
rather that he is at the top of the list in every
way. He is a man against whose integrity as well
as whose masterly mental attributes no word of
criticism may be brought. Of course at this timr
when the "anti" elements are hanging on by their
eyebrows so to sak there will be criticism of
Mr. Thomas hell be called a fanatic a religious
enthusiast a man who would apply the rule of
morals to the decision of every issue and that for
this reason he should not be named.
The people of Texas have heard these "distress
cries." these "warning signals" before. They have
heard this prattle about "jrsonal lilertyM and that
"business will be ruined." and Mill the state the
matchless state of Texas has ascended from height
to height in liei progress towards her ultimate and
ever inctcaiing goals. There are other men who
stand for the highest and best in government in
this race. but Cullen F. Thomas tourers above them
and it is for the strongest the ablest the "triedest"
of them al that Texas will cut its preponderating

Oh yes there are other things of importance and
all of them are worthy of consideration but let us
remember that the- farming interests of the Ama-

and gas resources of this territory and that people
will live on and prsjr whin our systems of light-

complete changes and agriculture will then as it
does today dominate all other things commercial
