sidering some of the new buildings

sissippi ha been brought to this city

noon In a pistol duel with County Sur-
veyor W. II. Moody of the same coun-
ty. Wllllamaon and Moody were both
candidates for chancery court clerk
snd It Is stated that the difficulty grew
out of circulars that were distributed
Thursday night presumably by Moody
supporters making certain charge
against Williamson. The two men met
In the court house yard while the pri-
mary election was In progress treat-
ed words were Indulged In and. It Is
claimed. Williamson drew a revolver
and fired at Moody. The latter re-
turned the (Ire and Williamson waa
track by thre bullets one wound In
the stomach being considered fatal.
Moody surrendered Immediately after
the shooting.

Memphla Tenn.. Aug. 7. A great
deal of excitement has developed over
the shooting and a mob went to the
county Jail where Moody was confined
and demanded that the Jailer deliver
him up. The officer had anticipated
such a move and almost three hour
previously had spirited the prisoner
away. A committee from the mob wse
allowed to search thej ail. and the peo-
ple quietly dispersed.

has been drawn on board the United
State receiving ship. Columbia at the
Brooklyn navy yard. Th chief petty
offlcr have refused to mes with a
negro who has Just been sworn In aa
chief carpenter'a mate. They have as-
serted their unwillingness to associate
with him In any way or recelv or
carry out any order that may come to
them through him In th line of dut"

prior to hi recent promotion whlcli
was for merit he ranked as carpen-
ters mate of the first class. When
Miller appeared at the chief petty of-
flrers' mess on Wedne.day eight of
the members of the mess arose and left
the table when he sut down. Miller ate
his dinner as though nothing out of
the ordinary hud happened. Nine then
he has hsd no company at his meals.
He has been allowed when he reached
th table first to rat alone and when
others have preceded him he has wait-
ed until they finished eating.
Captain Unow said Miller would be
protected as the navy make no dis-
tinction as to color.
