London April 24. A repetition of
tho great shipbuilding strike of the
nineties one of tho costliest and most
RcriotiH contests in the annals of Brit-
Inn lubor is now impending. The
time limit fixed by the Shipbuilding
Employers' Federation within which
the striking workmen on the north-
east coast may return to work will ex-
pire tomorrow. The men have. twice
voted aguliiBt returning to work on
the terms offered and if they per-
sist in their refusal all the shipbuild-
ing yards in the country will be
closed. Such a lockout would Involve
fully a quarter of a million people.

Considerable comment was caused
here today by the statement of Chan-
lain Hodges of the penitentiary to the
effect that financial ngont has recently
contracted with the Waters Pierce Oil
company for th supply of oil for a
year. The comment Is caused chiefly
because this concern has failed to pay
the taxfs due the state.
The mandate from United StateB
supreme court reached here in 'the
Sullivan Spanish land grant case. It
was at once transmitted to the dis-
trict Judge who Issued the writ of pos-
session directing the sheriff of Hidalgo
county to take possession of the land
in the name of the state. The state
woi the rase and the 55000 acres of
land will now be used for the benefit
of the public school fund.
The attorney general's department Is
being askpd questions from all over
the state as to whether or not saloons
will have to close on May 2. Depart-
ment has not as yet made an Investiga-
tion. Regarding the query from Palestine
as to whether or not it Is a violation
of law to engage In a raffling scheme
to dispose of merchandise the attorney
general's department holds that it ii
not unles- the raffle exceeds $500 in
value.

of the Organization.
Memphis April 24. Conference for
Education In the South amid prolong-
ed applause re-elected Robert C. Og-
den of New York president he yield-
ing to the solicitations of leaders to
take the place at least for another
year. Among other officers chosen
were vice president. R. J. Tialdwln of
Montgomery; treasurer W. A. Blair.

the executive committee which In-
cluded James H. Dillard of New Or-
leans; John H. Honemon. Ardelphia
Ark.; .1. H. Aswell. Raton Rouge and
J. H. Klrkland. Nashville.
A number of addresses were made
in which was presented the work of
women school Improvement campaign.-
and higher education for women in
southern states.
An open forum on compulsory educa-
tion was led by Dr. Wiekllffe Rose
agent of the Pcabody fund.

ed robbers after taking possession of
the Cumberland Telephone company
and heating the operator Into Insensi-
bility compelled Assistant Cashier R.
II. Hans of th Ballard County hank
to unlock the bank and open the safe
for them late Thursday night. The
robbers got away with $:1.oiki leaving
both Hahs and tho operator bound in
the telephone exchange where they
were rescued Friday morning. The
robbers escaped.
SHAKESPEARE
INMEMORY
Umdon April 23. The customary
dramatic festival was held at Strat-ford-on-Avon
today In celebration of
Shakespeare's birthday anniversary.
The old-world town was the Mecca for
hundreds of admirers and devotees of
tne muiortal bard among the number
being many celebrated literary and
dramatic lights.
At present the various Shakesper-
ian societies throughout the country
are engaged In plans for the erection
of a memorial which it is proposed
to set up to commemorate the tercen-
tenary of his death which will occur
in 19 J 0. It is proposed to raise one
million dollars of which half Is to be
spent on the mounment. A fine site
in Iondon has been selected for the
monument in Park Crescent adjoin-
ing Regent's Park and looking down
the Imposing vista of Portland Place.
THREE CREMATED.
Aged Couple and Daughter Dead
and Latter's Husband Dying.
Corry Pa. April 24. Three persons
wore cremated and a fourth probably
fatally burned early Friday in a fire
which destroyed the home of David
Wetherbee at Centerville a village
near hero. The dead are:
David Wetherbee aged seventy-five.
Mrs. wetherbee. aged sixty-five.
Mrs. Albert Lemm aged thirty their
daughter.
Albert Ix-mm was badly burned and
it Is believed he will die. Mrs. Lemm
t scaped from burning house but rush-
ed back in flames In an effort to save
her mother father and husband.

Bill to Bring Suit For Forfeiture of
Much Land Pastes House.
Washington April 24. By the over-
whelming vote of 243 to 8 the house
Thursday after several hours' discus-
sion adopted without amendment the
senate Joint resolution authorizing the
attorney general to file suits against
the Oregon and California Railroad
company for the forfeiture of all or
part of 2800000 acres of land grants
in the western part of Oregon. It Is
claimed by the government that by
reason of breaches and violations of
the nets making the grants the rail-
road company had forfeited all the
right to tht land In question. The sen-
timent of th? house was prartically
unanimous that the suits would work
no hardship on bona fide purchasers
of homesteads from the company. The
resolution was Introduced by Senator
Tillman and has parsed that body.
BISHOP'S BOAST TRUE.
Said He Would Not Be Taken Alive
and Shot to Death.
Atmore. Ala. April 24. Joe Bishop
white who lived near the head of Per-
dido creek was shot and killed by offi-
cers while resisting arrest on an in-
dictment charging him with carrying
concealed weoMns. Rishop sprang
from a window In a house firing at
officers and posse all of whom escap-
ed Injury. Deputy Sheriff TVrw-kburn
returned the fire killing BL-V.oo Hi
boasted he would lie taken alive.

Fort Worth. A rll 24. It is learned
that the fire which destroyed the gro-
cery store of F. L. Hoover Thursday
night was incendiary. Robbers set fire
to the store after takiiiR a quantity
of Roods Spipots of oil tanks were
left open and oil flowed over the floor
and boxes. Riving the firemen a diffi-
cult flRht In controlling the blaze.
Police have no clue.

Pittsburg April 24. Two persona
wore Injured and sixteen others nar-
rowly escaped from a burning apart-
ment house at Wilklnshurg a suburb.
The buildinn was destroyed.
