CHURCH 8TRUCK OIL.
Heavily .in .Debt .Gusher .Struck In
Church Yard No Service Sun-
Day. Butler Pa No services could be
held In the Reformed Church at Pet-
ersvllle "the Cabbage Patch" oil dis-
trict of this county today because
the congregation having gone Into oil
prospecting struck a gusher last night
on the church lot fifty feet from the
building. The flow came in so strong
during the night and today that a
large force hail to be kept at work to
care for the oil. The lucky strike Is a
Godsend to the struggling congrega-
tion which Is In debt for it property
and owes its pastor back salnry. The
well It Is believed will pay off all
debts and provide a neat sum besides
for future expenses. It is expected to
settle down to not less than 100 bar-
rels a day. Ex.
thewater'problem.
The discussion of the sewerage pro-
position by T. R. Batte Jr. and others
before the Progressive League Thurs-
day afternoon brought the water prob-
lem prominently to the front again. The
three methods suggested by Mr. Batte
were piping from the Brazos' river
deep well or areslan water and a large
lmjwundlng reservoir by means of a
dam at some suitable location near
the city. Mr. Batte favors the well
proHsltlon and this should be the
least exi?uslve. The outlay of
pu niid ng from the river appears to be
toe groat for practicability. Au im-
IKjunding reservoir would require an
area of 65 acre3 and no tho artesian
vtell proposition seems t j be the most
promising. i
According to statement of Mayor
Maloney It seems probable that all
of the city's bonded Indebtedness
may be refunded and covered In a
new Issue that would leave a suf-
ficient balance to provide for water
and sewerage. Mr. Maloney thinks
that such a plan would solve the prob-
lem at a reasonable cost to the city
and that If something Is done now
that It would result It saving In some
respects during the next few years
when present contracts mature. It Is
generally believed that If one artesian
well Is secured here that several will
be put down.
The problem Is of much Interest to
Bryan and the Eagle Is glad that there
Is considerable Interest manifested
and that Mr. Batte Is using efforts to
get it prominently before the town In
tangible form
I ule rorm.
ER FALLING.
Reports from the Prazos river last
night were that it had fallen about two
and a half feet and was going off the
land rapidly. It was not believed tho
rains of Thursday night would be suf-
ficient to put the river on the rise
again. The cotton uncovered by
the receding flood seems to be in
very good condition and It Is hoped
there will not be as much replanting
necessary as seemed probable when
the flood was at its height.
