learned by the Eagle are about a3
follows
Thursday night a negro attempted
to enter the window of the room of
Mr. Graham's daughter from the gal
lery and when she gave a terrified
alarm he fled making his escape. Ef-
forts to apprehend the intruder fol-
lowed. Deputy Sheriff Conlee visiting
the scene but were not successful.
Suspicion later pointed to the party
subsequently killed and Mr. Graham
and Mr. W. E. Gandy having made
an arrangement with the deputy
tiiU'rifT Conlee to come out Sunday
night went to hold the negro in case
he should get word and try to make
his escape. Upon their approach and
before the arrival of Mr. Conlee the
negro ran and was killed.
Mr. Graham had a preliminary hear
ing yesterday before Justice McGee of
this city and made bond in the sum
of $2000 which he readily gave. It
was stated in the evidence at the
trial that Sheriff Xall who was
there Sunday morning requested
( Messrs. Candy and Graham to keep
911. the lookout for the intruder and
hold him if caught.' The tendency of
Jhe evidence was to show that Mr.
Graham had no idea of killing the
negro when he went after him but
that he did not propos. that he should
get away.
w The offense which resulted in the
killing is one which is under no cir-
cumstances tolerated in this country.

ANNOUNCES FOR LEGISLATURE.
Hon. W. C. Davis Will Not Make Race
for Senate and Will Try for
Speakership of House.
To the Voters of Brazos County:
Some two weeks ago I made an-
nouncement as a candidate for State
Senator from this district and have
had great encouragement and assur-
ances of support throughout the dis-
trict. However I have had strong solici-
tations from many friends throughout
this county and from the State at
large urging me to offer for the of-
fice of Representative from this coun
ty instead of making the race for the
State Senate. I have therefore con-
cluded to withdraw from the senatorial
contest and ask for re-election to the
office I now hold.
In making this change of announce
ment I do so first because I believe
that my services in the last legislature :
were such as to warrant me in the be-!
lief that the voters of this county
would again honor me with this office; I
and second in order to gratify a per-
sonal ambition of mine in that I ex-1
pect to become an active candidate j
for the Speakership of the next House .
of Representatives.
Thanking you for the confidence
reposed In me and assuring you of
my steadfast fidelity and fealty to the
interests of the mases of the people
I hope to have the honor of again
representing this county in the lower
house of the Thirty-first Legislature.
I shall make a canvass of the county
before the primary and discuss mat-
ters of legislation giving my views
thereon.
Yours very truly
v W. C. DAVIS.
