Greenville Tex.. July 28. As Miss
Viola de Lancey sixteen years old
residing near Clifton about five mllej
west of Greenville was returning from
getting mail from the rural delivery
box. a quarter of a mile away at 3
o'clock Monday afternoon a young ne-
gro lying in some weeds Jumped up
and striking her with a pistol criminal-
ly assaulted her. She was found some
time afterward unconscious but re-
vived and told of the terrible treat-
ment she had received.
A telephone message to this city re-
sulted in the sheriff deputies and po-
lice repairing to the scene. By this
time the entire Clifton community had
been aroused and started in pursuit.
The wretch named Ted Smith was
surrounded In the Caddo bottom. Ho
managed to escape but was captured
about dusk on Wes Chuniley's place
west of here by two officers. The
latter took him Into the brush. Thfl
officers eluded the mob and at 3 : 30
o'clock Tuesday morning Marshall
Norman lodKCd the negro In Jail.
All Monday night crowds were on
the square. At 6 o'clock a mob went
to the Jail but Judges Montrose and
Thompson and Sheriff Hemsell mad
talks and the crowd left.
At 8 o'clock Tuesday morning the
crowd promised not to molest Sheriff
Hemsell while he took the negro to
the girl's home. She was sitting on
the gallery and when she saw the ne-
gro said: "That Is the 'nigger'" and
fully Identified him. The sheriff
brought him back and nearing the Jail
a mob surged around the buggy and
taking Smith dragged him to the
square. On the northwest corner they
put a rope arourd his neck to hang
him. Some called out to burn him.
The crowd dragged him to the south
side soaked him In oil put a load of
wood over him and set the pile on
fire. He was burned to ashes. The
crowd was large but orderly.
During the burning an old negro
made a remark about it being too
bad. He was severely horsewhipped.
An immense concourse witnessed
the negro burn and the excitement
waa tremendous. Every window on
the side of the court bouse where the
cremation occurred.
COUPLE FILES COMPACT.
No Divorce Desired but Merely
For Wife's Benefit
Chicago July 28. Lake Forest so-
ciety bas been given a suprlse. Two
well known residents of the suburb
filed for record a compact which in
other cases might be expected to ac-
company proceedings for a legal sep-
aration but in their case It Is nothing
of the sort. The parties Involved are
Henry Gordon Strong and Mrs. Mar-
garet Hubbard Strong. Mr. Strong
Is a son of General Henry Strong and
a member of the Chicago Union league
and Onwentsia clubs.. Mr. and Mrs.
Strong reside at Lake Forest and at
present are making their home at the
Onwentsia club.
By the terms of the compact which
was placed on record Mr. and Mrs.
Strong both release all dower lnhert
tance rights from each other while
Mr. Strong agrees to pay to his wife
$4000 a year for the first ten yean
after July 1 1908; $4500 a year for
the second ten years and thereafter
$")I00 a year until her death. Mr.
Strong declared that the arrangement
was "to facilitate" his wife's finanrinl
affairs. He said that Mrs. Strong goes
to Europe alone frequently and that
he wanted her "to be able to manner
her own n fairs and not be loft utterly
helpless."
The agreement provides that pay-
ments shall not be cancelled by tlifl
death of Mr. Strong but shall continnit
an obligation on his estate. They shall
cease in the event of the death of
Mrs. Strong.
Toot Lacerated by Gar.
Houston July 28. A five foot al-
ligator gar terribly lacerated A foot
of Harry Newnlng aged twelve years
at Seabrook. The boy was trailing
his feet overboard from a launch
owned by John S. Bonner when the
big fish struck and fastened his saw
like teeth through the boy's foot and
tried to pull him overboard. The foot
was terribly lacerated and the fish had
to be killed to make It turn loose. Mr.
Bonner made the rescue.
