New Lines and Extensions to Be Con-
structed During Coming Year.
San Antonio Tex. Oct. 8. Great
activity in railroad building in Texas
promises to be the feature of the com
Ing yiar. The proposed railroad from
San Antonio to the Rio Grande Is
now in process of organization. It Is
unofficially announced that one of the
big trunk lines of the country Is be-
hind the movement and that the road
will extend as far as deep water at
Tampico In Mexico and northward
through the greater part of Texas.
The Wichita Falls and Southern
Railroad Is to be extended from New
Castle to Llano a distance of 250
miles. At New Castle are rich coal
fields and this road will bring the
coal to Llano to work the iron depo-
sits there which experts have pro-
nounced as fine as anything in the
United States.
The same company will extend the
Wichita Falls & Northwestern now in
operation to Frederick Oklahoma
connecting with the Frisco at Altsu
Oklahoma. The Santa Fe is building
a branch from Cleburne Texas west
to Glenrose a distance of 36 miles
into a rich country. The Enid Ochil-
tree & Western is to build from Dal-
hart Texas to iSnld Oklahoma a
distance of 2tiu miles.
The Graham Rosewell & Western
Is a railroad projected from Graham
to Rosewell a distance of 350 miles
which will traverse Young Throck-
morton Haskell Stonewall and half
a dozen other partially developed
counties of Texas. A contract has re-
cently been let by Asher Richardson
and others of Carrizo Springs for the
building of a railroad from that place
to Cotulla on the International and
Great Northern a ditsance of 60
miles.

Affinities 7500 Years Ago.
It was the same old world 7500
years ago according to Prof. James
H. Breasted Egyptologist and expert
on oriental life. He told university
students that "affinities" were but a
part of man's life since records were
made. Speaking of 5500 B. C he
said: "Although there was only one
recognized wife there were 'affinities'
numerous."
"The other women of the household
did not enjoy the pre-eminence ac-
corded the wife" he said "but they
were by no means beasts of burden.
Frequently they were taught to amuse
their master by singing and dancing.
The impression that primitive woman
was a beast of burden is due to con-
fusing her with the women of a low
order of civilization of more modern
times."

- Roosevelt's Guns Spiked.
Washington Oct. 7. President
Roosevelt today announced that he
would make no speeches in sumiort
of the candidacy of Wm. H. Taft
for the presidency as there was no
necessity for such action. This
declaration was made during a call
of Senator Hemenway of Indiana
one of a series of conferences at the
While House at which the general
political situation was under review.
sir. iiemenway asked the president
regarding the rexrt that he would
take the stump. The president re-
plied that he had received numerous
requests to do so but he thought It
was unnecessary and made the state-
ment that he would not make any
speeches. Mr. Hemenway declared
that both the national and state tick
ets would be elected in Indiana.
Prairie Oil and Gas company had once
been refused an Oklahoma franchise
then an appeal in their behalf was
made to President Roosevelt by prom-
inent Republicans and that the Presi-
dent reversed Secretary Hitchcock'g
order and instructed that a franchise
be granted the company. Later an at-
tempt was made to grant the company
further franchises but it was checked
by Governor Haskell.

Rev. Garden Delivers Scathing Ad-
dress Before Humane Society.
Pan Antonio Tex. Oct. 7. It
Is a disgrace to Protestant churches
that they do not take more interest
in the homeless and delinquent child-
ren of this city" said Rev. A. W. S.
Garden in his address beiore the Tex-
as State Humane Society In session
here. "Were it not for the great
work that Is being done by the Roman
Catholic church through its orphan
asylum where from time to time we
are able to place children we would
be almost powerless to accomplish
anything in our work. There are 2000
children running the streets of San
Antonio who never darken a school
room door and when you stop to con-
sider that this is just 20(H) children
who are educated lor crime It is ap-
palling." Rev. Garden advocated the
organization of a bureau for the pro-
tection of children and animals and
through it to demand assitance from
the state legislature for the establish-
ment of a juvenile training school.
