Being the Victims.
Pittsburg. Feb. 4. Tuesday night
and early Wednesday 100 negroes were
arrested following a carnival of crime
ngalnst young white girls in the Her-
ron HIM district Kighty nine were
held over on charges of being 'suspi-
cious xrsons."

In that district and strenuous efforts
will be made to stamp out the assaults
on young women. Indignation is high
aealnst this character of crime.

Young Lady Meets Fearful Fate Being

Miss Fannie Walker the daughter of
Bill Walker one of Fulton county's
most prosperous farmers residing
near South Fork was burned to death.

the fireplace and were burning free-

mother was. the latter catching her
hut after a hard struggle she beat her
mother off and ran screaming to the

Woman Horsewhips Preacher. .
Coweta. Okla. Feb. 3. Rev. James
Peden preacher of the Baptist church
here was accosted by Mrs. L. Charlton
Wednesday and horsewhipped. He Is
said to be in a serious condition. A

Mrs. Charlton who Is alleged to claim
the preacher defamed her character.

Vetoes Bill Prohibiting Mnu-
facture of Liquors.
Nashville Feb. 3. Governor Patter-
son sent a seclal message to the leg-
I Islature vetoing the bill prohibiting the
manufacture of Intoxicants in Ten-
nessee. This bill passed both botrses
of the legislature. In giving his rea-
sons for this action the governor says:
"In the exercise of my constitutional
power as governor I veto thrs measure
and ask Its reconsideration:
"First Because it ruthlessly de
prives the state of revenue without any
sort of corresponding benefit.
Second It discriminates against
our own people and In favor of the peo-
ple of other states.
"Third It destios the property of
citizens without compensation.
"Fourth lit makes a dangerous pre-
cedent humiliates Tennessee and
! lowers the place of dignity she has oe-
copied as one of the proudest and most
1 conservative stales of the Cnion.
Fifth It violates the will of the ieo-
j pie twice expressed at the ballot box;
offends against their sense of justice.
and under the plea of civic righteous-
ness sacrifices a great moral principle
