Agricultural Commissioner Kone
has asked the attorney general to
umlertake an Investigation for the
purpose of ascertaining whether there
is a cotton oil mill and ginners trust
in Texas. It is claimed that such an
organization has been formed for the
purpose of controlling me price 01
cotton seed.
San Francisco is now reaping the
harvest of the seeds sown by Dennis
Kearney the sand lot orator and his
associates a quarter of a century ago.
It is as true of cities and states as of
individuals that "whatsoever a man
soweth that also shall he reap."
BRYAN TEXAS MARCH 3 1909.
BETWEEN TWO FIRES.
llearne Democrat: Profuse apol-
ogies are hereby tendered the Bryan
Eagle by this sheet for claiming that
Heame was the finance 1 and banking
center of this section. As the said
Eagle claimed we forgot that Bryan
was In this section. Having been duly
apprised of the fact we are now
ready to make any amends within
our Judical Jurisdiction.
A fine example of the retort court-
eous coupled with a double entendre.
It is hard to understand though how
any one could forget .iryan. It Is
only necessary to think of the Demo-
cratic party in order for that name
to occur to one. Galveston News.
Since Voltaire confessed hi.. Inab..-
Ity to erfute a sneer. The Eagle will
not attempt It. The head and front
of our offending consisted simply in
stating the fact that Bryan's banks
have on deposit about four limes as
much money as Hearne's.. Why the
News should butt in we do not know.
There la no "double entendre" in the
sneer at Bryan however. This is the
second recent Instance of the News'
littleness to which the riagle has
called the attention of Us readers.
In an article published last Friday
Monsieur Laubet ex-president of
France argues strongly that the
world is approaching rapidly the era
of universal peace. He says that pub
lic opinion In all nations condemns
war and that it is being chrystalisted
into an irrlslstable force.
That canard about Mr. Bryan being
a candidate for president the fourth
time is on a par with the story star
ted some time ago that he was about
to enter the ministry and the canard
of last week that he would .jon go on
the stage as star actor In a play
which he would himself write.
It nttiipflra that Lieutenant Gov

his announcement at Dallas that the
Governor would be satisfied if the
legislature would pass the general
appropriation bill and go nome. uov.

This la the last day of the reign of
Teddy the Terrible. Hallelujah!
After all the fuss made over the
successful cruise of the battleships
it was a far less important affair than
"the voyage of Columbus and his three
little wooden sail ships.
The cotton bale is an anomaly.
Great improvements have been made
In the methods of handling all other
staple commodities and the finished
product is put. on the market in an
attractive form but the same old
cumbersome cotton bale leaves the
gin partly coveted with jute bagging
to be cut all to pieces by samplers
and mashed out of shape by com-
presses and is finally delivered to the
spinners in a disfigured ragged and
unsightly condition. Its repulsive as-
pect is a large factor in making the
price unsatisfactory.

There is no serious o Jectlon to the
legislate rs. en masse visiting differ
ent parts of the state; indeed there
are good reasons for believing that
the time spent in such Jaunts is bet
ter employed than the average of that
employed in the legislative sessions
In the capltol. These excursions teni
to relieve the members of local prej
udices and to broaden their ylews. It
would be well If they could be exten
ded to include all parts of the state
especially those parts about which
the average member knows very little
such as the Panhandle and the Trans
Pecos regions.
Since It Is generally admitted that
legislative excursions are not a bad
thing within certain limits why not
systematize them so a" to secure the
best possible results? Let each house
upon organization apiioint a commit-
tee on excursions with authority to
arrange a program for the session. A
special train could be chartered for
the term and kept in readiness w hich.
In order to avoid the suspicion oi
railroad influence should be provided
at the expense of the State. Only
members and employes of the two
houses should be admitted all dead-
heads being cut out to save expense
but more especially to guard the un-
wary and unsophisticated legislator
from the wiles of the seductively Kay
and wickedly cunning lobbyist. The
more we think about it the more we
see the impossibility or condensing
into a paragraph all the advantages
of this plan.
District Court.
The jury for the week was empan-
neled in the district court yesterday
morning but there being no cases
ready for trial they were excused un
til Friday morning at 9 o'clock.

lowing cases: Webb Crawford vs.
Hattie Crawford; Prodigal Harvey vs.
Alice Harvey.
The grand jury has not yet made
any report to the court.

A Novelty Shower.
A brilliant social functioTfwas given
on Tuesday from 3 to 5 p. m. when
Mrs. E. J. Kyle entertained with a
miscellaneous "shower" In compliment
to Miss Loula Coulter whose marriage
to Mr. Walter Franklin Hoppess of
Hillsboro Texas will be solemnized
at the First Methodist church in tnis
city on Wednesday evening March
tenth.
Mrs. Kyle arranged her invitation
list to include those friends nearest
nd dearest to tne nonoree and as
she has by her sincerely and true
worth won the hearts of all a crowd
was present at the appointed hour
.Mrs. Kyle was first to welcome the
guests in the reception hall and with
her the bride elect received the many
pretty words and good wishes which
loving friends delighted to shower uiv
on her. In the pprlor Mrs. J. Allen
Myers and Mrs. J. W. Coulter received
and directed the guests to the punch
room where Miss Malcolm Mclnnis
presided.
The entire reception suit was touch
ed with bridal beauty tall vases of
wUte carnations and "howls cf bride
roses nested cozlly In billows of
biidal tulle. Over the arched door
ways bouquets of white carnations
were suspended by broad satin rih
bons and fern fronds and bows of
tulle adorned the chandeliers. White
wax candles burned In many crystal
spires and tall brass candnlabra held
a glow of white light which fell as a
benediction over the scene. In the
dining room the climax of beauty was
reached in the elegant table. Cluny
lace covered the richly polished wood
and a massive cut glass vase filled
with bride buds was the center piece
Cut class candle sticks held white
burning tapers and crystal bowls were
filled with white mints and salted
nuts. Supended from the chnnda-
lier over the table was a white dove
which hovered gracefully over the
fragrant roses.
In the window nook In the library
a fern mound had been placed and
amid the tender leaves was placed
a dainty gilded chair bowed with
white ribbons and a pretty bunch of
lillies of the valley.' Just over the
chair a white dove hovered and In
its bill was caught a silken bag of
dain'y laces and berlbboned gifts for
the bride. When Miss Coulter had
taken her seat in this pretty nook
dainty Lillie Bess Kyle held high in
her mother's arms pulled the ribbons
that sent the filmy laces and hand-
kerchiefs fluttering down over the
shoulders of the bride-elect. And then
the many beautiful gifts that had been
brought were pilled around her until
he was fairly covered.
Mrs. W. P. Bryan presented the
gifts in the following beautiful words:
May memories like a benediction fall
As in future years this hour you recall.
Let each gift prove "a thought each
thought a prayer
In this beautiful Isle of somewhere.
Over that fireside you go to cheer
May there always hover tne peaceful
dove
And throughout your new home atmos-
phere May Heaven descend in love.
In response with sincere apprecia-
tion in her voice Mss Coulter said:
"It is unnecessary to say that 1 appre-
ciate each gift made by loving nands
and given with loving hearts. When
I reach my new home and in memory
I dwell In dear old Bryan no thought
will bring me more joy than to re-
member this occasion where my
friends are all gathered together.
You say to me word3 now
In affection strong
Pray love me little
So you love me long.
A dainty white bri le book was in
the library and during the hours
friends registered their names and a
good wish for dear Loula.
Angel food and brick cream in
pink and white was prettily served. f
