Austin Texaa April 12. The Attor-
ney General In an opinion today ruled
that cases Instituted under violation
of the eight-hour statute passed by
the Thirty-second Legislature should
bo recalled because this law was re-
pealed by the Thirty-third Legislature.
The new law differs from the old main-
ly In being more specific.
Labor Commissioner Starling an-
nounces the new law applies to all
contracts beginning with the first of
the present month and will be rigidly
enforced.

released from Jail this morning after
being on a hunger strike ever since
her Incarceration nine days ago to
serve three years. The police expect
to return her to Jail as soon as her
health recovers.

Chicago April 12. Agents of the Illinois Vice Commission late last
night and early today brought consternation to the fashionable guests of
two downtown restaurants and other resorts against whose reputations
there rested no question except the nature of their cabaret entertain-
ments. From these places only the managers and members of the caba-
ret shows were taken to be questioned about tho alleged smutty songs
in the shows. From the Tenderloin men and women sightseers out
"slumming" were gathered before the commission.
One woman in hysterical fear of disgrace tried to Jump from a win-
dow when the police with subpoenas reached the restaurant where she
was "dining.". Another fell on her knees and wept. One man jammed
a roll of bills Into the officer's hands saying: "Take this for God's sake
and let my party go. You don't know what this means."

Several Small Towns in Arkansas Are
Covered No Loss of Life

Memphis Tenn. April 12. The Ar-
kansas River levee broke forty miles
above the mouth today at Red Fork.
The small towns of Lake Jefferson
Rosemary Kelso MacArthur and Mc-
Gehee will be Inundated. No loss of
life has been reported.
Judge J. W. Doremus returned yes-
terday afternoon from Austin where
he had been on business for the new
Interurban company known as the
Bryan and Central Texas Interurban
Railroad Company which absorbs the.
old Bryan-College Interurban Com-
pany. The charter of the new com-
pany was Issued and it is now in ac-
tual existence and one of the live
corporations of the State of Texas.
While In Austin Judge Doremus alao
closed up the legal proceedings in re-
gard to the two bond Issues of the city
of Bryan which were voted on Jan-
uary 7 and aggregate the sum of $35-
000. The bonds were in all things ap-
proved by the Attorney General and
will now be lithographed as quickly
as possible. As soon as this is done
they can be placed on the market
converted into cash and the money be
made available for street improve-
ment purposes and for erecting a new
water tower the purposes for which
the bonds were voted.
