THE JITNEY3 ARE COMING.
In the May American Magazine
Hugh 8. Fullerton writes an exceed-
ingly Interesting little fact-article en-
titled "The Jitneys Are Coming." Fol-
lowing Is a brief extract:
"Today jitney busses are running In
almost every large city of the West
and Central West and lines are being
started everywhere. The latest re-
ports Indicate that there are between
eight thousand and nine thousand li-
censed jitneys operating In these
i Itles. There are two hundred In I .or
Angeles alone nearly five hundred in
San Francisco New Orleans Is In the
hands of the Jits Denver Washing
ton Salt I-ake Milwaukee Toledo
and now Chicago and Washington.
The conquering hosts of Jitney busses
have swept eastward overwhelming
the entire country and Incidentally
bringing with them new municipal
problems that may prove as hard to
solve as were the old ones.
"The two big problems are conges-
tion of streets and danger of Injury.
In Kansas City the traffic police and
others declare that the Jitneys do not
congest traffic as much as street cars
do and are easier to haudlo. Los
Angelea already is complaining of
congestion of the main downtown
streets and danger to pedestrians and
shoppers.
"It Is evident that before the Jit-
neys are received as an established
public service factor some llalfiTlty
Insurance must be arranged. The jit-
neys are operated chiefly by persons
of small means and the danger of
personal Injury of passengers Is to be
considered. The street car companies
declure the proportion of passengers
Injured will be larger than In any
other form of transportation and that
It will be practically lmpoHslblo for
Injured pussengers to recover damages."

AN IMPORTANT WORD
ABOUT SPRING FOODS
In the "better babies" department
of the May Woman's Home Compan-
ion appears considerable .practical ad-
vice to mothers on various housekeep-
ing matters. One bit of advice about
spring foods follows:
"Patronize the markets which pro-
tect fresh green groceries from dust.
"Remember that all uncooked vege-
tables like radlshea oniona and let-
tuce must be washed thoroughly be-
fore serving; also all berries cherries
etc.
"Never buy stale or wilted fruits
and vegetable. Germs of decompo-
sition lurk In them."

American Husband Qrsstest Miracle
8aye French Dramatist.
New York April 23. The world
needs the superwoman. And I believe
the world will find her first In
America. I feel that It Is the destiny
of American women to be stronger
than their sisters In other lands to
lead the way Into the future while
holding to tliut which Is best In the
past.
There you have the vision of Jules
Bols pot-t philosopher dramatist and
feminist M. Hols arrived from France
recently on a number of Interesting
missions. As representative of the
French Minister of Foreign Affairs he
was to thank America for the aid and
sympathy she has given his country.
He was also charged with the Investi-
gation of our farming methods by the
Minister of Agriculture and with the
survey of our school and college
courses In French by the Minister of
Commerce.
Meanwhile he has been giving a
series of lectures In some of New
Tork'a most exclusive drawing rooms.
And until now woman has been the
' reflex of man. She has not dared to
be herself. She has worn a mask
concealed whatever was In her head
and heart displaying only such emo-
tions and thoughts as man desired to
see In hr. The aurwoman of the
future developed In liberty will be
no longer silent masked but self- ex-
pressive real. Only when ahe la In
the majority will the new race begin
and the Uue superwoman be born.
The greatest miracle the world has
ever known Is the social miracle of
the American husband. For gene-
rosity for affection for trust for tol-
erance for hard working loyalty I
have never seen anything like him.
He has accomplished a thing whlc no
other age or country baa succeeded In
accomplislng. Elsewhere man la the
foe of woman here he Is ber friend.
You may take this as a truth; the
woman who Is a success In tbe borne
Is the woman who Is needed by the
city and the State. The woman who
is of no use to the borne Is of no use
to the government. It is tbe virtues
of the home woman which Is la patrle
the county needs. We do not want
the woman who copies man or who
scorns man or would dominate blni.

AUSTIN Tex. April 23. It Is un-
derstood here that Governor James
E. Ferguson will submit to the com-
ing special session of the Thirty-
fourth Legislature an amendment to
the law providing for the establish-
ment of three new State normal
schools which would change the
method of aelectlng the locating
board. This has become necessary
It la said because of the recent
action of the Supreme Court of Texas
In declining to perform tbe duty Im-
posed of selecting two members of the
aelectlng board. The present law
provides that the Governor Lieuten-
ant Governor Attorney General and
two private citizens the latter to b

until the next regular session shall
have made the necessary provision for
the aelectlng board two year bence.
