For the Missouri Valley Conference, college football's centennial year
is over. North Texas finished the season in second place in the conference
with a 4-1 MVC mark and a 7-3 overall record following the 42-24 loss to
San Diego State. Memphis State, which handed the Eagles their only con-
ference loss, clinched the title Nov. 22 by smashing Louisville 69-19. The
Tigers finished 5-0 and 8-2, losing to Mississippi and Tennessee. Tulsa
landed in the cellar with Wichita following a 35-29 loss to Louisville
Varsity, Frosh Win 96-90, 86-74
Thanksgiving Day.
Several Eagles have been included in-
dividually in post-season games. Steve
Ramsey and Glen Holloway will appear in
the East-West Shrine game; Ronnie
Shanklin and Cedric Hardman will play in
the Senior Bowl; and Ramsey will play in
the Hula Bowl.
RAMSEY, Shanklin, Holloway and
Barry Moore were named to the Associat-
ed Press All-MVC first team offense and
Hardman and Bernie Barbour were pick-
ed for the defense. Holloway and Moore
made the team in 1968 and Ramsey re-
peats from 1967.
AP's second team included Eagles
Mike Marr, Willie Parker. Richard Gill
and Steve Atchley. Bob Helterbran, Glynn
Tucker. Jim Brewster. Jimmy Franklin,
Chuck Mills. Leo Taylor, Jim Swords and
Leonard Dunlap received honorable men-
tions. Holloway was an honorable men-
tion in the UP1 All-America poll and was
a Playboy pre-season All-America pick.
Ramsey, the passing ace of the last
three years, closed his college career
with one of his less-impressive perform
ances but still maintained a .484 career
completion average. His 15-46-5 for a .326
average against San Diego was his second
lowest of the season and third lowest of
his career. He had a .241 day against
Weber State this season, his worst per-
formance ever, and a .290 against New
Mexico State in 1967. In 1968, he only
dipped below the .400 mark once in the
rain-soaked battle with Cincinnati.
Even with a season considered by many
to be disappointing. Ramsey added seven
NCAA career records to his file and team-
ed with Shanklin for an eighth. Dunlap
tied an NCAA record for touchdowns on
pass interceptions with three.
In addition. Eagles set 21 new school
records and tied six others in 1969. Twelve
of them belong to Ramsey, seven to
Shanklin.
Graduation will take a heavy toll this
year with eight starters on offense and
five regulars on defense leaving. Ramsey.
Shanklin, Holloway. Marr. Moore, Helter-
bran, Swords and Brewster will leave the
Eagle attack unit while Hardman, Atch-
ley. Barbour, Mills and Wes Ballou leave
the defense.

The North Texas State basketball team
opened its season Monday night by de-
feating the Northwestern Louisiana De-
mons 96-90.
The Eagles were paced by Herb Lark-
ins. a sophomore from New Nork, and Joe
Hamilton, an all-conference selection
from Kentucky. Larkins burned the nets
for 22 points while Hamilton had 19. It was
Hamilton's four field goals late in the
second half that enabled the Eagles to
stave off a last ditch Demon effort to pull
out a win. Four other Eagles hit double
figures: Crest Whitaker, 17; Ephriam Mc-
Daniel, 13; Mort Fraley, 14; and A1 Shu-
mate, 11.
COACH DAN SPIKA had mixed emo-
tions concerning the Eagle victory. "We
are happy that we won. We have a long
way to go," he said.
The Eagles appeared to have the game
wrapped up leading 92-85 with only 59 sec-
onds left to play. Forward A1 Shumate
commited a personal foul and a technical

foul was tagged on when Shumate failed
to raise his hand in the allotted three sec-
onds. Demon guard Doug Watts proceed-
dd to the free throw line where he con-
nected on three for three. Watts then hit a
field goal and the Eagle lead was sudden-
ly narrowed to just 92-90.
With 30 seconds remaining, Whitaker
hit two free throws pushing the Eagle
lead to four. Northwestern Louisiana lost
its final chance to win when guard John
Janese committed a traveling violation.
SCORING HONORS for the game went
to Demon Charles Bloodworth with 26
points. Bloodworth was plagued through-
out the contest with fouls. He finally left
the game with about six minutes remain-
ing. leaving a definite hole in the Demon
attack. He also pulled down 16 rebounds
to lead both teams in that department.
NT fell behind bv as much as seven
points in the first half. The Demons led
28-21 and it looked as though the Eagles
were in for a long night. Two key baskets
by McDaniel and twelve quick points by
Larkins helped the Eagles to regain the
lead and walk into the dressing room with
a half time spread of 53-45.
IN THE FIRST game of the double-
header, the Eaglets, behind the strong
performance of Ben Sayles. pulled out an
86-74 victory over the Northwestern Jun-
ior Varsity.
Sayles hit on 17 of 22 shots scoring 41
points and grabbing 24 rebounds. Coach
Bill White was impressed with Sayles and
the overall improvement of the Eaglets.
In the second half the team realized that
Northwestern was unable to contain
Sayles and we were able to adjust and
pick up the win," he said.
