Do you care about good
nutrition? ,
"Good nutrition" is a
phrase that is familiar to
all of us. No doubt you
have heard it mentioned
time and time again in
school, magazines and
newspapers.
Try asking yourself
these questions: What
does good nutrition mean
to me and my family? Do
I use nutrition guides in
planning the meals for
my family? How can I
help my family under-
stand the importance of
good nutrition?

These questions cannot
be answered for you but
perhaps the following can
help you answer them.
A daily food guide can
help each of us plan nu-
tritional meals for our
families. This food guide
consists of the Basic Four
Food Groups: (1) Milk
Group, (2) Bread-Cereal
Group, (3) Meat Group,
and (4) Vegetable-Fruit
Group.
Plan on the following
amounts of each group
daily for each member
of your family.
Milk Group — Children
3 to 4 cups. Teenagers
4 or more cups. Adults
2 or more cups.
Meat Group — (Me^,
fish, poultry, meat sub-
stitutes) 2 or more serv-
ings.
Vegetable-Fruit Group
— (All vegetables-fruits)
1 serving citrus fruit or
other fruit for vitamin C,
1 serving dark green or
deep yellow vegetable for
vitamin A at lease every
other day, 2 or 3 serv-
ings of any fruit or vege-
table including potatoes.
Bread-Cereal Group —
(Bread, cereal, rice
oats, etc. ) 4 or more
servings while grain, en-
riched or restored.
Each day our food
should supply us with
many different nutrients:
Protein for growth and
for repair of the body,
minerals and vitamins for
growth and to keep the
body functioning proper-
ly, and fat and carbohy-
drate for energy.
Most foods contain
more than one nutrient.
But no single food con-
tains all the nutrients in
the amounts we need.
Choosing foods wisely
means selecting kinds
that together supply nu-
trients in the amounts
needed.
The above daily food
guide is one way to choose
food wisely. With it, you
can get the nutrients
needed from a variety
of everyday foods.
