HISTORY OF ELLIS COUNTY.
Of his nine children seven grew tip to years
of maturity, namely: William O., deceased;
Thomas S., the subject of this sketch; Robert,
deceased; Mary A., wife of C. C. Wilson of
Grove Creek; John, deceased, whose family
resides in Tehuacana; Mattie J., wife of R. E.
Orr of this county; Eliza, deceased, and Elizabeth,widow
of Dr.White of Ennis, this county.
MIr. Andrews was married the second time in
1886, to Miss Etta Bridges of Kaufman county.
IMr. Thomas S. Andrews remained with
his father until le was twenty-four years of
age. In 1861 he joined Company D of the
Nineteenth Texas Cavalry, under Captain
Farrer and Colonel Dornell's Brigade, and
served on this side of the river. When the
Colonel was captured with his regiment at
Arkansas Post, Captain Farrer's company
was on detached duty and so escaped. Afterward
it was engaged in a thirty-days fight
against General Banks at Nacogdoches on
lied river, the contest terminating at Yellow
Bushy Bayou, and, naturally, participated in
several minor engagements.
In 1866 Mr. Andrews married and began
to improve a farm given him by his father,
on which place lie resided until the fall of
1887, when he moved to Tehuacana to educate
his children. About two years afterward
his father died and he returned to the old
homestead, which he purchased and where he
has since resided. He is now the owner of
744 acres of fine land, with 315 acres under
cultivation, with good house and other buildings,
etc. He makes a specialty of raising
and grading stock, some of which are already
equal to the best in the United States.He was married in 1866, to Miss Laura
Coffee, who.was born in Indiana in 1845, the
daughter of T. C. and Sarah (Rockett) Coffee,
and a sister of IHarmon Rockett (see sketch
of J. B. Rockett). Mr. and Mrs. Coffee
were natives respectively of Virginia and
North Carolina, and came to this State in
1849. Of their twelve children ten lived to
be grown, namely: Ellen, the wife of J. HJeffers;
Laura A.; Melissa, wife of Macey
Wright; Livona, deceased, who married John
Lewis, whose family reside in this State;
John, residing in this county; Johnney B.
Theodore, who resides in Sherman; Sanunel;
Cullen; Mattie, the wife of William Batchelder,
and Wallace. Mr. Coffee was one of
the early Justices of this county when court
day at his office was one of the noisiest days
of the year. He died in 1890, at the age of
seventy years. His wife still survives, and is
now in her sixty-ninth year, a member of the
Methodist Episcopal Church, as was her hus
band. The children of Mr. and Mrs. Andrews
are: Cora L., deceased; John T., Alberta, Oliver,
Oma, Henry, deceased; Lena, and Earl and
Ernest, twins. Mr. and Mrs. Andrews belong
to the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, in
which religious body Mr. Andrews is an el
der. He is also a member of Palmer Lodg-e
No. 499, F. & A. M.
IEHEMIAH G. GOULD, an enterprising
and progressive farmer of Ellis county,
waa born in Mississippi, September 19,
1837, a son of Robert Gould, a native of
East Tennessee. The latter emigrated to258
