Alabama, and thence to Mississippi, where
he was among the first settlers. He married
Miss Sarah Harris, a native of Alabama, and
both died in Mississippi. They were the
parents of five children: James, who died in
1844, at the age of fourteen years; Mary L.,
who married B. F. McWhorter, and died in
Mississippi in 1878; N. G., our subject;
Sarah F., who married Dr. M. D. McWhorter,
and is now living in northern Mississippi;
and Nancy J., the wife of H; H.
McWhorter, who was killed in the army at
Baton Rouge. Nancy J. afterward, in 1866,
married J. W. Lewellen, and is still living
in Mississippi.
Mr. Gould, the subject of this sketch,
came to Texas in 1870 and settled in Ellis
county, where lie has since remained. The
same year he bought 294 acres of raw land,
to which he has since added until he owns
450 acres, 185 of which is under cultivation.
He enlisted in Company K, Thirty-first Mississippi
Regiment, under Colonel Orr, and
served in the Western Department of the
Army of the Tennessee. He was in several
battles, and served mostly in Mississippi,
Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia and Kentucky.
After fourteen months' service as infantry,
Mr. Gould was transferred to cavalry of the
Second Mississippi State Troops, W. L. Lowery,
commander. He served there eighteen
months, when it was consolidated into Ashcroft's
Regiment, Armstrong's Brigade. He
continued until the close of the war, was
never wounded or captured, but had one
severe spell of sickness.
Mr. Gould married Miss Sarah C. Wells,a daughter of Rev. Miles A. and Mary
(Moody) Wells, natives of Tennessee. Thle
father died in Mississippi during the war,
and in 1870 his wife came to Texas, where
she died in 1885. Mr. and Mrs. Gould have
had seven children, of whom the eldest died
in infancy; Robert died at the age of ten
months; John H., born August 24, 1866, is
a farmer near home; Mary A., born October
14, 1868, is at home; Luther G., born February
10, 1872, is also at home; Joel F.,
born July 16, 1877, died December 2, 1881;
and Robert B. was born August 26, 1880.
Mr. Gould is a member of the Masonic fraternity,
and the family are members of the
Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
gOHN P. CLAUNCH, of Ellis county,
was born in Harrison county, Texas,
March 28, 1847, a son of William M.
and Jane C. (Gillmore) Claunch, both natives
of Tennessee. Before marriage the father
taught school, and afterward was engaged in
farming and stock-raising. He came to
Texas about 1846, and in 1854 settled in
Dallas county. In 1855 he moved to Ellis
county, and in the fall of 1872 he removed
to the old homestead, where he remained
until his death, February 22, 1888. His
first wife was the daughter of J. P. Gillmore,
of Tennessee, who came to Ellis
county about 1846, where he engaged in
farming and stock-raising. He subsequently
removed to Johnson county, where he died
in 1869. Mr. and Mrs. Claunch had seven
