lISTORlY OF ELLIS COUNTY.
Claunch, a distant relative, and both are now
deceased; John P., our subject; Christopher
C., a farmer of Ellis county; Harriet A., the
wife of J. A. Stewart; Martha J., who married
E. S. hIamilton, and died at Cleburne
in 1888; William A. was deceased November
15, 1879, at the age of twenty-three
years; and Susanahl H., the wife of T. J.
Davis. The mother died, and the father
was married in 1868 to Mrs. Cummings, a
widow, who is still living at the old homestead.
By this marriage there were three
children, two of whom survive,-Jeremiah
C. and Nancy A., both at home.
John P. came with his parents to Ellis
county at the age of eight years, and located
where he now lives. After attaining his
majority lie rented land, and also for about
five years followed stock-raising on his own
account and for other parties. In 1870 he
took a drove of horses to Louisiana for market,
and also made another trip in 1872. He
received a portion of his father's estate,
which amounted to ninety acres, and since
then has bought the interest of the other
heirs and other lands, until lie now owns 748
acres, 150 acres of which are under a fine
state of cultivation, and he is also engaged in
stock-raising. At the age of eighteen years
Mr. Claunch enlisted in a California regiment,
called the Arizona Brigade, and served
until the close of the war. His services were
mostly on the border of Texas, and at the
time of the surrender the regiment disbanded
and returned home.
lie was married to Miss Lucinda R. Mor.
ton, a daughter of Joel and Sarah R. Morton, natives of Alabama. The father died
while in the service of the Confederacy, in
1863, and his wife afterward married J. A.
Higgins. Mr. and Mrs. Claunch have had
five children: Evalena, born November 5,
1879; William A., September 10, 1882;
Harriet L., December 29, 1883; Sarah M.,
August 9, 1886; and John P., November 9,
1889. Mr. Claunch has served as School
Trustee, and also as Justice of the Peace two
terms. He is a member of the Alliance, and
both lie and his wife are members of the
Methodist Episcopal Church.

tOHN L. MACKOY, a farmer of Precinct
No. 8, Ellis county, is a son of Moses
and Hannah (Lawson) Mackoy. The
parents had seven children, four of whom
still survive: Lavinia, a resident of Virginia,
was first married to Thomas Dugan, of Portsmouth,
Ohio, and after his death she married
Elias Ware, a native of Baltimore, Mary.land,
also deceased; John L., our subject;
Henry C., a farmer of Greenup county, Kentucky;
and Moses, who married Augusta
Sherward, is engaged in the mercantile business
in Waxahachie. The father was a
minister of the Christian Church for over
forty years, but never had any stated church,
and never took pay for his services. He died
in Greenup county in 1869, at the age of
sixty-nine years.
The subject of this sketch came to this
county July 14, 1876, from Greenup county,
Kentucky, where he bought 110 acres of
land, and two years later he bought 220 acres_ ____
