, J-F. MARCHBANKS, who occupies a
prominent position in commercial circles
in Ellis county, was born in Tennessee
in 1820, and is a son of Josiah andMargaret (Cannon) Marebbanks, natives of
South Carolina. He is the seventh of a
family of fifteen children. His grandfather
was a soldier in the Revolution. His father
was a farmer by occupation, and was unable
to give his children the advantage of a collegiate
training. Therefore, our subject acquired
his education in the primitive log
school-house, and at the age of nineteen
years, apprenticed himself to a tanner in
Bloomington, Indiana. When he had mastered
his trade, he returned to Tennessee, and
for seven years he was engaged in farming
and milling; he then sold out and emigrated
to Texas, arriving here in 1850. He settled
at once in Waxahachie, which was then the
county seat, although it had only a score of
buildings; there were two stores in the place,
and one other in the county. He purchased
teams and engaged in freighting from Houston
and Pine Mills, and sold out -at the
end of two years, having made a considerable
amount of money. He then embarked in the
mercantile trade and blacksmithing; he had
the first hardware store in the place, but sold
it on the breaking out of the civil war. During
the struggle between the States, he
secured the contract for carrying the mail
over four routes for the Confederate Government.
After the surrender he again entered
commercial life, forming a partnership with
Mr. Pendleton which continued four years;
he then succeeded to the full ownership, and
conducted the business four years more.
Closing out, he opened a grocery store which
he carried on three years. He discontinued
this enterprise to re-embark in the dry-goodsHISfTORY OF ELLIS 0OUNTY..
