cantile pursuits at Ringold, and was meeting
with good success when the war paralyzed all
industries. In 1861 he returned to Bradley
county, Tennessee, and built a tannery which
he conducted from 1861 to 1874. Although
he knew nothing of the business, with experience
as a teacher lie Inade himself master
of the trade, and became one of the finest
tanners in the country. The advent, however,
of special machinery and new methods
of tanning forced him from the field. In
1874 he removed to Dalton, Georgia, and
there took up agriculture; four years later
he came to Texas and settled in Ellis county,
purchasing his present farm of 200 acres of
fine, fertile land. One hundred and fortyfive
acres are under cultivation, and the
buildings have been improved 'since Mr.
Chesnutt came to the place. He resided on
this place until 1882, when he removed to
town, where he had bought a nice residence.
He was elected to the office of alderman in
1888, and was re-elected in 1890; he has discharged
the duties of this position to the entire
satisfaction of the public and with great
credit to himself.
He was married in 1855 to Miss Minerva
E. Watkins, a daughter of Edward and Fannie
(Cleveland) Watkins, and a second cousin
to himself. Mr. and Mrs. Watkins were the
parents of the following children: Clarissa,
deceased, wife of Pleasant Routh; F. P., deceased;
Harvy C., deceased; Josephine, deceased;
E. B., deceased; A. M., a resident of
Rome, Georgia; and Robert F., of Atlanta.
Mr. Watkins died in 1829, and Mrs. Watkins
was married a second time to CalebParker, and of this union were born four
children: Lou, widow of Judge Adams, of
the Circuit Court of Tennessee; M. W.,
Joseph P., and Cleveland C., deceased. Mrs.
Parker died in 1884.
Mr. and Mrs. Chesnutt have had born to
them three children: J. (., attorney and
Judge of Clay county; Hattie and Leon,
twins. Leon died in 1865, at the age of
seven years; Hattie married J. B. Ragon,an
attorney of Chattanooga, and master and
clerk of chancery of Hamilton county, Tennessee.
J. C. Chesnutt married Miss Kate
Phelps. Mr. and Mrs. R. N. Chesnutt are
members of the Baptist Church. He belongs
to the F. & A. M., and is a nmetner of the
Chapter and Council.
EIENJAM1N C. LANCASTER, one of
the leading young farmers of Ellis
county, was born in Rutherford county,
Tennessee, February 9, 1846, the tenth of
eleven children born to Dabney and Nancy
(Fry) Lancaster. Our subject came to
this State with his father when eight years
of age, where he received only a commonschool
education. In 1863, while yet a boy,
he joined Company F, under Captain Veal
and General Parsons, and served until the
close of the war. He was in the battle of
Mansfield, Louisiana, where his command
came into action with General Banks, of the
United States forces, and for ten days M'.
Lancaster was engaged in heavy skirmishes.
