next' year. By his second marriage Mr.
White wedded, in 1861, Miss Tena A. Laughlin,
daughter of Newton Laughlin of this
county, who was originally a Missourian and
settled in this county as early as 1846. By
this marriage there were also three children,
as follows: Roxie M., born November 8,
1862, now the wife of Jesse Parker of this
county; Maggie L., born March 27, 1865,
now the wife of W. J. Curry. also of Ellis
county; and Emla J., born July 19, 1866,
and married Houston Self of Italy, this county.
This Mrs. White died September 17, 1866;
and by his third marriage, March 18, 1868,
Mr. White wedded Miss Maggie Houston,
daughter of James F. Houston of this State
and a distant relative of the celebrated Sam
Houston, the first President of the Texan
Republic. By this, the present, marriage,
there have been the following named children:
Robert M.. Jr., born August 22, 1869;
James B., born August 19, 1870, died October
6, 1880; Willie A., February 25, 1872;
Bettie L., October 30, 1873, died August 1,
1891; John M. H.. September 80, 1875;
Albert A., November 23, 1877, and died August
23, 1891; Ella B., November 21, 1879,
and died March 1, 1880; Mary L., March 20,
1881; Linnie L., January 29, 1883; Willis
G., January 25, 1885; and Deo V., February
14, 1889.
Mrs. White is a member of the Cumberland
Presbyterian Church. She has a strong,
robust constitution, is tall of stature and of
a commanding presence, with more than ordinary
intellect. She is a devoted companion
and a loving mother.I F. GIDEON, of Ellis county, was born
in Texas, April 21, 1844, a son of
Judge L. H. Gideon, an early settler of
this State. He was a large land owner, and
was among the early merchants of Milford,
having been in that business as early as 1858.
A short time before the war he sold his
store and engaged in the mill business, and
during the great struggle he milled for the
soldiers' families. After its close he engaged
in farming, and in 1873 he settled on the
farm where he died in 1879. While living
in Cherokee county, he served as the first
county Judge, which position he filled with
distinction and credit. Mr. Gideon married
Miss Sarah A. McFadden, a daughter of
William McFadden, a native of Virginia, but
who died in Mississippi. They had eight
children, viz.: William A., who is deaf and
dumb, married a mute; Almira E., married
V. E. Berdine, a resident of Brazoria county,
Texas; Joseph P., engaged in mining in
California; Van W., a farmer of Henderson
county; Lelia A., who first married Samuel
Craig, and afterward J. P. Weathers, a farmer
of Ellis county; Agnes C., the wife of W. J.
Lemmons, a Methodist minister at Hubbard
City; and Mary B., the wife of T. 0. Wells, a
farmer of Ellis county.
The subject' of this sketch remained in
Cherokee county until ten years of age, when
he came to Ellis county and attended school.
He received a good education, and at the beginning
of the war, when seventeen years of
age, he enlisted under Captain Frost, then
under Captain Homesley, next Captain
Price, then Colonel McCulloch, and afterHISTORY OF ELMS OOU~tNTY.
