in 1882. He was a successful farmer, owning
at his death 1,000 acres, was a Democrat
politically, and was identified with the Baptist
Church. Our subject's mother, nee Melvina
Kimmel, was born in Illinois in 1831,
but subsequently settled with her parents in
Dallas county. Mr. and Mrs. Henderson
were married in 1847, and were the parents
of five children, namely: George W., the
subject of this sketch; Jane, the wife of T.
M. Moore, a stock-raiser of Johnson county;
Jasper N., deceased; Mary E., wife of Valentine
Crawford, a farmer and stock-raiser of
Young county; and Susana, wife of George
Weaver, of Texas. Mr. Henderson's parental
grandfather, James Henderson, was a native
uf Louisiana, but subsequently removed
to Texas, and died in Tarrant county in 1868.
He and his wife had five children,-John,
Susan, Nancy, Juda and Rebecca.
George W., our subject, was born in Dallas
county, Texas, in 1848, where he worked
on a farm and attended school until 1872, and
in that year he engaged in teaming from
eastern Texas to Dallas county. In 1875 he
located on his present place, having received
160 acres of land from his father, where he
carries on farming and stock-raising. He is
now the owner of 720 acres of well improved
land. While Mr. Henderson has been successful
financially, he has surronndered himself
and family with the comforts of life,and
is always ready to contribute to a good cause.
In 1874 he was married to Mary Jane Baggett,
who was born in Dallas county, Texas,
in 1851, a daughter of Seborn and Mary Baggett.
They have had five children,-AnnieM., Lillie C., Myrtle G., John S. and Thomas
J. In politics he is a Democrat, and religiously
both he and his wife are members of
the Baptist Church, in which he has been a
deacon for a number of years.

J. SPENCER, one of the oldest and
most prominent farmers and stockraisers
of Ellis county, was born in
Tennessee, in 1833, the son of Thomas and
Elizabeth (Brooks) Spencer, natives of Indiana.
Thomas Spencer was quite a prominent
farmer in Tennessee, where he resided
until his death. He and his wife both died
in Lawrence county, that State; he about
1871 and she about 1875. They reared
seven children, as follows: Eleanor, wife of
Solomon Brewer, of Wayne county, Tennessee;
A. J., of Lawrence county, same State;
Jane, wife of. W. F. Blassingam, and both
are deceased; Elizabeth, who became the
wife of John Howell and has since died; W.
J., our subject, was the next in order of
birth; Thomas, deceased, and Henry, who
resides in Waco, McClellan county, this
State. The others died young.
Mr. W. J. Spencer, at the age of twenty
years, came to Texas, arriving July 4, 1854,
in Ellis county, without money and without
acquaintances. Until 1861 he worked on a
farm for wages, during which time he was
married. In 1862 he joined Company K,
Thirtieth Texas Cavalry, the company corn-.
manded by Captain Lee and the regiment by
Colonel Gurley, of Waco. He participated32
