Eliza T., deceased, born November 2, 1863;
Thomas A., born January 7, 1865; the next
were twins who died unnamed; and A. C.,
born January 8, 1874. Thomas A. is now a
practising physician in the city of Corsicana,
Navarro county, Texas.
LOHN W. COLEMAN, a prosperous
farmer of Ellis county, was born in
Warren county, Kentucky, September
22, 1834, a son of John W. and Mary (Randall)
Coleman, natives of Virginia, the father
born in 1787, and the mother February 25,
1796. The mother was a daughter of William
and Peggy (Adams) Randall, she being
a first cousin of President John Quincy
Adams. William Randall, grandfather of
our subject, was a native of New York; he
was put on a man-of-war when quite young,
lost sight of his relatives, and served during
the whole of the Revolutionary war; his sons
fought in the war of 1812, and his grandsons,
one of whom is our subject, served with distinction
in the war of the Rebellion on the
Southern side. The parents were married
February 22, 1823, and had seven children,
viz.: Edward T., who resides in Missouri;
James W., who came to Texas in 1853, and
died here June 26, 1887; Margaret F., of
Waxahachie, was married in Kentucky in
1883 to L. (. Doyle, now deceased; Michael
H., who came from California to Texas in
1852, and now resides in Limestone county;
Susan S., who came to Texas in 1858, whereshe was married to R. H. Dearing, who died
in the army in 1864, and she now resides at
Hillsboro; David A., who died in Kentucky
October 2, 1832, at the age of fourteen
years; and John W., our subject. Tle
father died in Kentucky July 22, 1847, and
his widow cane to Texas in 1853 to join her
children, where she died November 25,
1880.
John W. Coleman, our subject, care to
Texas in 1853, first settling in Dallas county,
where he was employed as a farm hand four
years. He then came to Ellis county, and
bought his present farn of 320 acres of raw
land, which he has since improved. In 1861
he enlisted in Company A, lNineteenth Texas
Cavalry, Colonel N. M. Burford, and served
to the close of the war. He served mostly
in Arkansas, Louisiana, Missouri and Texas,
was in the Marmaduke raid at Cape Girardeau,
also in Bank's raid on Red river, after
which be received a meritorious furlough
and returned home for sixty days. He then
he returned to the command, and found them
in winter quarters at Moscow, Polk county,
where he remained during the winter, and
then scouted through Southern Texas. He
was in this State at the time of the surrender,
after which the company disbanded and
he returned home. Mr. Coleman resumed
farming at once, and undertook to look up
his stock, but was unsuccessful in finding
many of them. He has sold part of his first
purchase, but still owns 196 acres, about 140
acres of which are under cultivation.
