at which he worked twelve years. He was
engaged in the merchant tailoring business
about ten years with his brother, and two
years with Alonzo Ramsey. Mr. Rice also
served as postmaster at Montevideo ten years,
under Filmore, Pierce and Buchanan's administrations,
after which, in 1858, he came
to Texas, having been nine weeks on the road
from Montevideo to Dallas. He first located
on rented land six miles from Dallas, where
lie remained until the breaking out of the
war. Ile enlisted in the Thirty-first Texas
Infantry, Company D, and participated in the
battles of Manchester and Atchafalia, but was
never reported sick or wounded. He worked
at his trade during the war, having made a
suit of clothes for Captain Cook, for which
he received $50 in Confederate money. At
the close of the struggle Mr. Rice brought
his family from Eastern Texas, where le
continued to farm until 1868, and in that
year moved to his present home, where lie
has 250 acres, 160 of which are under cultivation.He was married in 1855 to Martha A.
Saddler, who was born in Georgia, in 1837,
a daughter of William B. and Mary Saddler,
also natives of Georgia. Mrs. Rice died in
1870, leaving four children, namely: Elizabeth,
wife of L. H. Parsons, a farmer of Runnels
county, Texas; Riclard J., who is married
and resides near his father's place; Mary
L., at home; and one deceased, an infant. Mr.
Rice was again married in 1872, to Miss Priscilla
Smith, born in Virginiain 1845, and who
came with her parents toTexas in 1857. They
have had two children, Archie D., at home;and Ben A., deceased when eighteen months
old. In politics Mr. Rice is a Democrat,
socially a member of the Farmers' Alliance
of Ferris, and religiously a member of the
Cumberland Presbyterian Church, in which
he has been elder for thirty-six years. At
the organization of Dr. Smith's Church of
Dallas lie was the only elder1 and retained
that position until moving to his present
home. le las been a member of the church
since 1845, having been converted under B.
M. Palmer, now of New Orleans, and at that
time stationed at Anderson, South Carolina.
HARLES T. IRVINE, a prosperous
farmer of Ellis county, is a son of
John T. Irvine, who was born in
Thomas county, Georgia, April 28, 1825.
He subsequently removed to Snwannee county,
Florida, and in 1883 to Ellis county, Texas,
where he died October 29, 1885. He began
life with about $2,500, and at his death was
estimated to be worth about $30,000. Our
subject's mother, formerly Martha S. Wich,
was born in Thomas county, Georgia, April
28, 1829, where she received a good Erglish
education. Mr. and Mrs. Irvine were married
November 21, 1848, and had one child,
the subject of this sketch. The paternal
grandfather, John R. Irvine, was born in
Savannah, Georgia, December 15, 1789. He
began life with a good plantation and ten
negroes, but being unused to business he lost
everything after five years, after which he
