KI1P ABILINE CLEAN.
From Other Newspapers
The ltoporter is well invure of the fact that Abi-
lene is perhaps already the cleanest eity of 120U0
people iu the state of Texas'. Visitors who come
here are always attracted by the clean appearance
of the town and our superb streets. Compliment
ufter compliment is paid the city on its appearance.
But the fact remains that wc 'can improve on the
appearance and the actual sanitary condition of the
city by everybody co-operating with our city of-
iicials'iu their efforts to keep the city clean. Noth.
iug should be thrown into the back alley that
would not look well in your front yard. Health is
the great boon that everybody desires. Without
health life becomes a drudgery and is not worth the
living. With health life is pleasant even though
wc live in humble circumstances There is noth-
ing to compare with a good appetite fine health
and plenty of fire in the blood. Such things don't
happen neither do tliey exist under all conditions.
If you would be healthy and enjoy life you must
have proper surroundings. You must have sanita-
ry conditions about your home.
Uow many noble lives have been sacrificed upon
the altar of filth! Hoy many families have been
called to give up the darling child mother father
brother or sister simply because they did not
know how to keep house! Did not realize that filth
breeds flies and that flies are deadly enemies of
the human family. The faithful family physician
perhaps urged that the Hies be Icepbiont of the
Jiome that the water be purified that the itotue be
kept sanitary but the matter passed at that and one
after another of the family was sick some dyiug
others being down for a long time with heavy doc-
tor bills. And all of it unnecessary. If everybody
would Observe a few simple rules of living that or-
dinary comfort demand four fifths of the sickness
of the people would never occur.
Some people may think that an editorial like this
one is Jiot necessary in Abilene where liiu death
rate is very low where the town is a model of
cleanliness where people are seldom sick but there
js no standard that men have feet that cannot be
raised with profit. It should be our constant aim to
do a little better all the time. Abilene should be
made the uleanest town in the tTnited States- Us
fame should go far and wide for cleanliness It is
nothing short of criminal for people to be siek with
fevers in tins climate. There is nothing to cause
fever here but the people and since that is the case
We should never hear of a case or fever
.Lot everybody uuite in one great effort to clean
Ahifene from head to foot and to keep it that way.
Don't imagine that we are saying that Abilene is
not already a clean sanijary well kept citv for it
is but We are urging that we banish everything
that is unclean.
A higher compliment bus not been paid any set of
men than was paid the candidates for office in the
cityr election Tuesday it isr the first election we
ever witnessed where there were more than
ten candidates and not a single opposing candidate.
Wo elected a Mayor Chief of Police four Commis-
rs and seven School Trustees for a term of two
years and there was not a single ltiiiu on the ticket
vho hud an opponent.
The First National bank of Cumby has started

has organized for its immediate vicinity a boy's

two. The bank is offering cash prizes to the boys
who get the best results from one aero of land. The
boys are started in with high spirits and the enthu-
siasm will likely increase as the work of the year
progresses. Jn this county all of the bankers are
participating in the work of encouraging the whole
people or the comity tu agricultural pursuits. The
are helping to finance the work which John li.
Ericksou has in hand and which lie is doing with
great enthusiasm. -Greenville Evening Banner.
Women and The Schools.
The passage of the Son Antonio schopl bill by the
Legislature and its signature by the Governor i
means that hereafter women will be members of
the school committee of that city. The new law
provides that three women "shall" serve upon the
uoaru instead ol "may" serve as was .formerly the
provision. The siizo of the committee under the
new law will be nine so that one-third of the body
will hereafter be women-
Mrs. Eli Ilertzberg Mrs. Milton J Bliem and
