Netters Drop Match to T C U
Dragons To Play Here Thursday
By RANDY NICHOLS
Daily Reporter
The men's tennis team lost its second
match of the fall Friday to TCU by a
score of 8-1. The Mean Green's record
now stands at 0-2 for the season.
Thursday the netters play the Paris
Junior College Dragons. The match
starts at 2 p.m. at the Men's Courts.
The bright spot for the Eagles Friday
was Gary Olsen. The St. Petersburg,
Fla., freshman was the solo winner for
the Mean Green. He defeated Tut
Bartzen of TCU 6-4, 6-3. Bartzen was
ranked 27th in boy's 18 and under last
year in the nation.
Olsen temporarily lost control after
winning the first set; Bartzen took a 3-0
lead to begin the second set. Olsen then
regained his form and won six straight
games to win the set. Coach Casey
Moore said, "That was incredible for
Gary to do that, he really played well."
David Cody, Fort Worth freshman,
also played well although he lost in three
sets to Jimbo Allin of TCU.
"TCU is in the top 20 in the nation,"
Moore said. "I wasn't disappointed in
the way we played, and 1 don't think the
guys were either. We should do very well
in the spring, and I believe that we'll
surprise some people."
Paris will bring its best to play the
Green Thursday and Moore said the
Dragons' top two players are extremely
good. Playing for Paris will be a foreign
student from Mexico. He was ranked
nationally in Mexico, Moore said, and
will be a good match for the Eagle's No.
I player.
Moore said he would like to see Gary
Olsen play at No. I this week, so the
young freshman will have a real test.
"Gary is playing very well and I believe
it would be good for him to play the
foreigner," Moore said
The NT Rugby Club won the consola-
tion championship in the Ft. Sill, Okla.,
rugby tournament last Saturday and
Sunday.
NT played three gatnes in the tourney,
winning two and losing one. Every team
in the tournament drew one bye.
NT lost its first game of the tourna-
ment, 6-4, to Oklahoma State University
on Saturday morning and was forced
into the consolation bracket.
Norbert Valerio, Corpus Christi
sophomore, scored NT's only try against
OSU. The extra point kick that would
have tied the game was no good.
NT advanced to the consolation finals
by defeating an independent team, the
Shadows, 28-0, later Saturday.
Jim Shannon, Fort Worth junior;
Butch Bernier, El Paso senior; Jim But-
ters, Roanoke senior; Frank Wyatt,
Stillwater, Okla., senior; and Paul Roth,
Robstown senior, scored tries for NT.
NT won the consolation cham-
pionship Sunday, defeating Oklahoma
University, 7-4. Valerio scored all of
NT's points as he kicked a field goal and
scored a try. NT will meet OU again this
Saturday at Norman.

a personal record for French.
The big surprise for Coach John
McKenzie was Roy Worrall The
Denton freshman placed third for the
team and 18th overall with a time of
20:42. McKenzie said, "Roy has been
having good workouts and he ran real
well in the meet."
McKENZIE SAID he was disap-
pointed in his other freshmen. He said,
"Weiss, Bleyl and Schondfeld will have
to run a full minute faster for the team to
do better.
"I don't know why we didn't run bet-
ter; we have the talent and our training
has been good. I guess we'll just have to
be patient," McKenzie said.
One of the premier runners for NT
last year was Ken Buyers, Fort Worth
junior, who ran despite being ill for two
weeks with the flu.
Buyers had not recovered completely
and did not have the strength to run
well. McKenzie said he is hoping for a
speedy recovery by Buyers. McKenzie
said that with Buyers returning at full
strength the team standings should
improve.
This Saturday the Mean Green travel
to Houston to compete in the Rice In-
vitational. The meet will be held at Buf-
falo Bayou and the course will be four-
miles-long.
McKENZIE SAID this week's com-
petition will be tougher than last week s
and he is hoping that his team will
improve. Other teams in the meet are
Texas, Texas A&M, LSU, University of
Houston, McNeese University. Pan
American University and the host
school, Rice.
McKenzie said, "The teams we are
running against this week are much bet-
ter than the teams last week. To do well,
all the runners will have to bring their
times down."
The team will leave Friday afternoon
and will return Saturday night after the
meet.
