Sunglasses serve as fashion fix
By Jill Wojciechowski
Special Writer
There was a time when people wore
sunglasses to protect their eyes from the
sun's glare, but today — as often as not
— they wear "shades" to protect their
image.
According to Rita Rowe, manager of
The Sunglasses in the Golden Triangle
Mall, sunglasses have become a fashion
accessory item for college students. It is
not unusual to see shades on people,
especially college students, any time of
the day or night, rain or shine. Ask why
and you'll get a variety of answers.
Of the 25 NT students polled, 18
agreed with Rowe that sunglasses are
fashion items. Four said they wear
sunglasses to hide their eyes while
watching people (without being
conspicuous). Two said they wear
sunglasses inside because they do not
have any place else to put them and one
said he wears his sunglasses to portray
an image. "1 want people to think I'm
groovy, like Yin and Yang. I'm either
Yin David Bowie or Yang Lou
Reed ..."
BUT SOMETIMES there is even
more to it than that. Janie Lewis-Zygiel,
an NT doctoral student in psychology,
said, "There are people who hide
behind their sunglasses. It is part of an
image they are trying to project about
themselves, or a way for them to build
their confidence."
Some people's eyes are sensitive to
fluorescent lights, and some wear
sunglasses while working on a computer
terminal because the screen gives off
ultrviolet rays, said Grace Ma, an
optometrist at Pearle Vision Center in
the Golden Triangle Mall . The ultraviolet
rays can lead to eye cancer and cataracts
later in life.
Ma said the same holds true for people
who watch an extensive amount of
television, because "television screens

Darren McKee and Leslie Morgan model sunglasses
give off the same kind of ultraviolet rays
that a computer screen does "
As far as lenses arc concerned, she-
said there is a lens on the market called
"UV 400" that is designed to cut out
% percent of the ultraviolet rays with
which the eyes come in contact. Ma
suggested that people with sensitive eyes
wear a rose-tinted lens if they wear sun-
glasses indoors. The best lens color for
outdoor sunglasses are gray or brown.
BO'I'H MA and Rowe agreed that the
sunglasses craze among college-aged
adults is attributed to fashion trends.
They also agreed that RayBans are the
top selling frames.
Rowe said the best selling style at her
shop is the "Wayfarer" — the type of
sunglasses Tom Cruise wore in the movie
"Risky Business" and Don Johnson
wears on "Miami Vice." Cruise wore
solid black frames and Johnson wears
the tortoise shell frames.
Another popular RayBan style is
Metal Rim, the type worn my Cruise in
the film, "Top Gun."
Soho by Nickelson is another popular
frame style with the college crowd.
Rowe said the style is patterned after the
glasses club men wore in the 1950's.
She also said Bruce Willis of "Moon-
lighting" wears this style, as did
President Dwight Eisenhower.
And what is the price for these
fashionable shades that have taken
college students by storm? "At The
Sunglasses, the price range is from 99
cents (children's) to $170," Rowe said,
"The RayBan Wayfarers retail for
$48."
