Selecting Cotton Seed
George Clayton has saved the
seed from the stalkjof a volunteer
ootton whioh oame up in his gar-.
den June 1st. Tho ground had
been irrigated but was not after
the plant oame up.
BYom this one plant he gather-
ed 208 bolls tho seed ootton
weighing exaotly 2 1-2 pounds.
It is evidently a fine variety and
Mr. Clayton 'will plant the seed
and get a ta'rt from it!
This yield' with one stalk to!
the hill 3x3 1-2 feet apart would
produce 6 l-2baleB of 500 pounds
each "per aore.
jn Lamar oounty 34 years- ago
he began saving the seed from
the beBt bolls. He went ahead
of the pickers' ahu 'seleoted the
best' bolls frpm .ohoioe stalks In
three yearsihe had.saved enough
Bcuuibuipiuub cu uurea oi ootton
and this acreage produced 33
bales averaging '412 pounds. At
the time ootton seed was thrown
away- exoept suoh as was kept
fortseed jtetlrClayton sold the
seed of this 33 bales at $1.00 per
bushel. -
4t will be remembered that the
premium ootton at the WorkVs
Fair was the result of seleoting
seed in that way and Mr Clay-
ton was perhaps the first man to
demonstrate the method
It has long been the praotioe of
tho bost farmers to seloot seed
corn in thiB way by putting
asido tho bost oars as thoy used
their oorn.
This plan oan not bo used
howover until tho boginning of
another picking season but it is
not out of plaoo to agitate tho
question now in order to give
planters time to oxohange oxpor
ienoos with eaoh other
about tho mattor. Somo of
them may bo ablo to give us their
experience on the samo lino.
