OLD MAN
Brett Deaton
I cannot help but note
his tortured exodus from the auditorium.
The old man died five years ago.
Perhaps the fact has slipped his attention.
And you-
how dare you grab my arm and point
with a smile.
And your eyes seem to outline
a reverence
that I myself cannot conjure.
And you continue to watch him,
nudging me at every lurch,
every off-balance step,
every teetering pause,
as if I too were not riveted
to his aged corpse.
As if I who sleep on hardwood floors
were not captivated by this creature.
