FARM BRIEFS
County Agricultural Agent
By Wylie Roberts
The following 4-H boys who
are participating in the Sears
Pig Program this year have
litters of pigs: Steve Howard,
Prairie Valley; Jerry Rushing,
Lone Star; H. B| Love, Sunset;
Dan McLeland, Bowie; and Roy
Proctor, Sunset. All of these
pigs are registered Durocs. The
boys have done a good job with
them and have some good pigs.
It is not too late to spray
pastures for weed control with
2,4-D if the weeds are not too
far along in their growth. Sever-
al farmers and stockmen sprayed
their pastures last year and got
real good control for a very
small cost. Norman Heath of
Bowie was one who controlled
ragweeds with one spraying at
a cost of only $.55 per acre for
the material. This is much more
economical than having to mow
several times.
Anyone desiring complete in-
formation on weed control
should get a copy of the bulletin
on the subject from my office.
The State Department of Agri-
culture regulations on the use
of herbicides must be adhered
to.
* * *
The practice of using pre-
emergence and post-emergence
chemicals for weed and grass
control in cotton as well as
spot spraying of Johnsongrass is
gaining in popularity and use.
The lateral oiling, using a
herbicidal oil for grass control
is one that can really cut down
the cost of the hoe bill or elim-
inate it completely. The oiling
shoes must be obtained to do
this job. This practice of oiling
with naphtha can be started
when the cotton is about 7 to
j 10 days old. Use 5 gallons of
naphtha per acre. This practice
can be continued until the cotton
is about 5 to 6 weeks old or
until the stem becomes cracked
and roughened to the extent that
it will absord or injure the
cotton.
Don't forget the use of the
| rotary hoe when the grass is
small.
