Joe Casey of Longview
has his name in the news
this week because of his
"green thumb". Casey,
who works in Lone Star
Steel Company's account-
ing department, spends
his spare time gardening.
JOE CASEY
The pride of Casey's
crops this year is toma-
toes. He recently brought
a basket of them to the
office to show around,
and they fetched admir-
ing comments.
Casey casually display-
ed tomatoes weighing from
a pound to a pound and a
quarter each. The largest,
of perfect shape, measur-
ed 14 inches in circum-
ference.
A veteran of 11 years
with Lone Star, Casey
loves to garden. The hard-
est part, he insists, is find-
ing the time to do it. The
tomato crop, for instance,
began months ago when
he prepared the bed with
compost and left it to de-
compose during winter
months. He started the
plants in a cold frame and
transplanted them at the
proper time.
Staking and topping the
stalk of the big hybrid
plant, Casey increases size
of the fruit by limiting
the number of each plant.
His garden includes
most of the vegetables
usually raised in this area
and melons. The show
pieces though, are brought
to the office where his
fellow workers sample the
produce.
Agile with a pencil and
ledger, Casey's buddies
think his thumb works
well too.
