Feb. 10-16 recognizes
safety for child passengers
The Texas Department of High-
ways and Public Transportation
joins law enforcement agencies and
citizens' groups throughout the na-
tion in recognizing Child Passenger
Safety Awareness Week, Feb. 10-
15.
The theme, "Buckle Up for Love!,"
is designed to encourage parents
and others to protect their children
by correctly using child safety seats
and safety belts. When used cor-
rectly, child safety seats are ex-
tremely reliable in preventing deaths
and injuries to young passengers.
Motor vehicle crashes are the
number one killer and crippler of
children. In 1989, highway crashes
killed 723 child passengers under
the age of 5. Parents can help
reduce the number of deaths
caused by such crashes by buckling
in their loved ones every time they
drive.
Child restraint systems save 238
lives in 1989 and 1,324 children
since 1982. Correct use of child
protective devices in vehicles is 71
percent effect in preventing death
and 67 percent effective in prevent-
ing serious injuries to children 4 and
under.
All 50 states and the District of
Columbia have laws requiring in-
fants and young children to be
placed in safety seats and secured
with safety belts.
For more information about Child
Passenger Safety Awareness Week
activities, contact Deborah Cren-
shaw, Texas Department of High-
ways, at 903-796-2851.
