gave a large crowd of room
mothers some ground rules to
go by at a called meeting Mon-
day morning.
He asked specilically that
room mothers not go to school
. parties early and walk up and
down the halls talking since
it disturbs the classes.
.... He said the matter of getting
* teachers expensive gifts had
gotten out of hand and re-
quested that teachers be given
only one gift a year at Christ-
mas.
Huckabee emphasized that
the new rulings were made at
the request of the majority of
the teachers themselves.
He said that only the Christ-
mas and Easter parties begin
at 1 p.m. Halloween and Val-
entine parties do not start un-

Mothers who want to arrive

LOVE

A slightly-built Lone
Star Steel geologist put
his name in the news by
wanting an education very
badly. C. A. Barber of
Lone Star wanted one
badly enough to travel
over 40,000 miles for it.
and at no time was he
more than 90 miles away
from his wife and daugh-
ter, Debbie.
The story began short-
ly after Barber was em-
ployed in Lone Star's ore
engineering department in
in 1956. He wanted to
complete his college train-
ing and possess a degree.
He began to investigate
area colleges. The only
one offering the proper
courses was Centenary in
Shreveport. Then the de-
cision was made. He would
attend night classes, com-
muting each afternoon
after work.
Often he had classes
beginning at six p.m.
This meant a hasty sand-
wich or skipping an eve-
ning meal entirely. Then,
because needed courses
often were not offered in
a particular semester, the
time extended. By the
time he proudly accepted
his B.S. degree in Geolo-
gy in 1961, Barber had
logged more than 40,000
miles.
He had worn out two
automobiles, and used
countless light bulbs in
his study lamp. But he
had completed his educa-
tion.
Nowadays, the spare
time is devoted to more
leisurely activities. Fish-
ing. hunting and serving
as secretary for a bowling
league are now his spare
time activities.
"It was quite an ex-
perience," he said, "but
it was worth it."
