A new spirit
COW POKES
By Ace Held
A couple of years ago. Rocky Branch was
the place where the highway from Dainger-
field forked to Omaha and Naples.
And that's about all.
The physical part of it is a little larger
now and there are a few new homes in the area
but the biggest growth of all has been an in-
tangible one of spirit and pride.
Rocky Branch decided it could be better
and set out with determination to make it so.
Its citizens invested untold hours in work
dd odds and

for a riding club, home demonstration club,
and a garden club.
Tho?e who had been passive toward neigh-
bors found something in common wilh them
?:nd the} worked together in the commoi pur-
pose of community betterment.
It has paid off some now for the commu-
nity as it was judged the best in its division in
the improvements it made last year. There
may be other honors and awards since it will
now be judged against the best in the state.
Regardless of how the state contest comes
out, Rocky Branch already is a winner.
It won the biggest prize of all when it was
able to unite its citizens into an organization
that cared what type place they lived in and
wanted to make it better.
The community deserves the commenda-
tion — and the envy — of its neighbors.

Gets rid of assorted ideas

house cleaning this week, he
claims.)

1 was cleaning out a stack
of old newspapers which had
accumulated in a corner of my
work room out here and while
I was at it the thought occur-
red. why not clean out some
of the old ideas which have
stacked up in a corner of my
mind, so I thought I would.
I will send them to you and
you can stack them in some
corner somewhere around the
office or throw them out en-
tirely. I'm through with them.
For example, here's one:
Man is taking the long way
around to blow up cities. In-
stead of developing missiles
that'll hurtle halfway around
the earth and come down on
top of a city, why not drill
holes through the earth to fire
rockets through and let them
explode underneath?
They'd avoid air pollution
that way.
Or, why hasn't some insur-
ance company come out with a
policy to insure you against

Los Angeles now has seven
million people and four mil-

a couple of decades it'll have
14 million people and 28 mil-

place to find parts for a sec-
ond-hand car.
I heard a politician in Wash-

say he was just a country boy
trying to get along. Don't city
boys ever try to get along?
Cassius Clay says he'd rath-

Since every president now-

I could go on, but I'll finish
