been cutting a new channel that threat-
ens to leave Memphis high and dry a
mile awny. The turbulent river al-
ready has to Its credit or discredit a
score of towns deserted in this man-
ner with consequences serious enough.
In the case of Memphis however
these consequences would be disas-

costly harbor facilities would be ut-
terly ruined and the city left with a.
huge raudbank between its fine levee-
and the stream.
The threatened danger was first not-
ed by government engineers about a
year ago and preparations immedi-
ately started to avert it While the In-
satiable river has for several years
been eating railroads houses and
farms in the vicinity of Memphis
sucking them Into Its muddy maw and
carrying them down to the gulf of
Mexico it seemed that the hungry
stream had at last met something
that would check its appetite when a
sheer wall of solid rock appeared at
Hopefield Point opposite Memphis.
But the rock was soon being under-
mined. The willow mats now being placed

' Besides these portable instruments
there are provided for the officials
pocket instruments that can send but
cannot receive messages.
When a message Is sent all the sta-
tions in the system receive it but In
practice it hns been found to work
much like a party line telephone giv-
ing little trouble to the stations for
which the message Is not intended.
Pocket - receiving Instruments for
wireless telegraphy are also appearing
now. They are useful of course to
only a limited degree for they can
' only receive and not send and they
i receive only strong signals such aa
j those of nearbv stations or government
time signal Saturday Evening Post.
