There is a mistake somewhere. At
least three esteemed members of the
next legislature say that they have
enough votes promised them or ahout
enough to Insure their election as
speaker of the next house.

The Brownwood brick plant is able
to sell. all the brick it can make
without any effort at all at selling.
There are towns even close by that
have never yet learned that Brown-
wood is making a good quality of brick.
There is material enough of the kind
being used here tp meet an unlimited
demand. Vitrified brick can also be
made that is equal to any made any-
where. The shalp and the iiecesBary
labor ought to be Converted Into money
at least as fast R there Is a demand!
It will help Browyi wood to grow.
It may be a bit paternalistic to errrict
compulsory education laws and for
that reason objectionable to some peo-
ple who think that there should never
be a departure from the established
customs of the fathers but it would be
the means of reducing the cotton acre-
age in this country and advancing the
price quicker than can ever be done
through organizations for that pur-
pose. It seems that this is the only
way that can ever be successfully
adopted lor keeping the children out
of the cotton patohes when they should
be in school.
The Bullotin wishes to be under-
stood as commending in most unquali-
fied terms the action of the city coun-
cil on the sidewalk building ordinance.
It will come quite hard on some of us
who feel that we'are unable to build
and all regulations of that kind do
fall heavily on some but when it Is
over the town will be so much the
better off. Under the plan of allow-
ing just those who will to build just
what they will on any sort of grade
the 'best results could not be obtain-
ed. By and by Brownwood will be-

dr. BUCKNER'S FAREWELL.
The recent session of the Texas
Baptist Convention was a most har-
monious one and In the results obtain-
ed as well as In the addresses deliv
ered was a most remarkable gather
ing. ; Dr. R. C Buckner who has been
the presiding officer for the last fif-
teen years the man wbo Is so well
known and so beloved as the head
of the great orphan's home at Dallas
bearing his name made a beautiful
and touching address at the close of
the session one that left Its impress
upon the mind of every one who
heard it. His closing words should
be an inspiration to every one to do
still' better work In life and were as
follows:
"In the time that remains for us
lot our labors continue let us ever
strive to excel In our obedience to God
our j working for his cause and his
glory and for the honor and tho love
that are. due to him In everything.
"This is no time to talk of dying.
