SENATE OF LILLIPUT.
The Way Dr. Johnson Outwitted the
House of Commons.
Parliamentary bodies were long a
great stronghold of resistance to the
press. Reporters' were strictly barred
from them aud reports of their pro-
ceedings were sternly punished. It
was among the triumphs for the right
and for common sense which Franklin
achieved that he caused the chamber
of the provincial assembly of i'ennsyl-
vania to be thrown opeu to publicity.
Nevertheless no reports were allowed
of either the Continental congress or
.the constitutional convention.
Dr. Johnson's violation of the cher-
ished privacy of the British house of.
commons is a classic story. lie report-
ed Its debates without entering Its sa-
cred precincts and in order to escape
j the severe penalties of the law tiered

orated them Into a brilliant spread. He
was indeed the illustrious fouuder of
the immortal craft of rewrlters. His
discerning readers came to know not
only that the senate of Lilllput was -the.
house of commons but that "Blefscu"-
stood for France and "Mildendo" for
London; that "sprugs" meant pounds
that "Nardac" was the Duke of New
castle and so on. What his notes lack-
ed his Imagination readily supplied.
Never was the eloquence of parlia-
ment more brilliant than In Johnson's
reports of the debates. In which he ad-
mitted he took care that the Whig
dogs got the worst of It although Pitt
himself must have felt mollified when
he read the wonderful outburst attrib-
uted to him by Johnson on "the atro-
cious crime of being a young man." It

A STORY OF NELSON.

Nelson said:
"No; send for sealing wax and can-
dle." Some delay followed owing to the
man's having had his head taken off
. Colonel Stewart asked
"Why under so hot a tire and after
so lamentable an nccldcnt have you at-
tached so much Importance to a cir-
cumstance apparently trifling?"
"Had I made use of a wafer" re-
plied Nelson "the wafer would have
been still wet when the letter was
presented to the crowu prince. Lie
would have Inferred that the letter
was sent off In a hurry and that wo
had some pressing reasous for being in
a hurry. The wax told no tales."

Advertise!
There never vas a time In
vertlslng brought such splendid and immediate results. Of course
we refer to advertising in newspapers and more particularly if
you please in the Bulletin. We have no patience with catch-
penny advertising believe it is money worse than wasted. But
newspaper advertising pays. Proof of this statement Is easily
obtained.
The Bulletin reaches a majority of homes of Brownwoed and
Its circulation continues to grow steadily. We hope some day not
very distant to be able to boast that the Bulletin reaches regu-
larly six times a week every newspaper-reading family in Brown-
wood. This Is not a vain hope for once we get the paper going
to a home it Is an indlspenslble article there thereafter. We are
slowly .hut surely gaining ground. The Bulletin wants the ad-
vertising of the' Brownwood merchants In order that the paper
may be worth more to the subscribers that the merchants may
sell more goods and that our Income may be added to. We be-
lieve tho Dally Bulletin Is worth something to Brownwood we
know It Is worth something to the merchant who uses Its col-
ums to advertise the fact that ho has certain wares for sale. If
you are not among the advertisers in the Bulletin call up the
office and get In good company. The cost is trifling while the
benefits are certain and substantial.

The company used entirely their
own special scenery which the Brown-
wood stage easily accommodated.
i Tno costuming was elaborately rich
and the cast was apparently without a
weak member.
Miss Pauline Harice as "Salome
and George V. Dill as "Marius a"
Young Roman" were especially pleas-
ing and strong in their parts.
Calcium light effects aided in In-
tensifying the more dramatic scenes.
Miss Harice in a slight modification of
the famous Salome dance won much
applause. The play presented with
great accuracy the Biblical story of
John the Baptist and of Christ The
stormy scenes attending the last days
of the Savior were depicted with dra-
matic effect aided greatly by the su-
perb stage settings.
