Dogs and Somersaults.
As there is more than one way of
cooking a goose so there k more than
one .method of teaching a dog to throw
somersaults. Hut the most practical
and thorough manner is to fasten a
cord around the body of the animal
close to the fore legs and two people
should hold the ends of the cord on
either side of the unfortunate dog. A
third party armed with a stout rope
lakes a position immediately in front
of the canine acrobat and with a meas-
ured and masterly stroke Hogs the
floor at close quarters to the dog's nose.
At each stroke of the rope the dog
springs backward and that movement
is the trainer's golden opportunity. As
the dog springs backward the rope
passing under its body is jerked up-
ward and. although the first few at-
tempts may prove futile the somer-
sault is acquired in course of time. An
intelligent dog soon sickens of this or-
der of things and throws somersaults
without tin- assistance of ropes. .

A Land of -Great Resources and of
Amazing Distances.
Alaska on some near tomorrow ig
expected by an otlicial of the United
States geographical survey to have a
half million increase in population.
The metal and coal mining industries
should each support at least 100.000
and if a third of the land classed as
arable is now available for farming It
will furnish 20.000 homesteads sup-
porting over 100.000.
The tourist who travels to Glacier
Bay. the capital of Juneau and the
picturesque Sitka must not suppose ho
has seen AlasKa.
He could skirt another I.000 miles of
coast line to Cordova Valdes and
Seward and then; writes a correspond-
ent of the San l'raneisco Chronicle if
lie woufd See Alaska his journey is only
well begun.
For . the gold fields of Fairbanks
would be 100 "miles to the nor.th. and
those of Nome would be as distant as
New 'York is from Chicago;
It would be a still greater distance
to the seal rookeries of the L'ribiiof
islands and the great tundras of the
north with their herds. of wild rein-
deer and their lonely Fskiino igloos
while to reach the westernmost AIeu
tian island would require a journey
half as long as "that from Xew York
to Seattle. .
Should the tourist retrace his steps
to Skagway cross the White pass and
follow the -mighty Yukon for J00i
miles to HeriiJg" sea his knowledge" of
Alaska while much enlarged would
still be incomplete..

A Norwegian Cheese That Is Made of

In November. lSOo. I awoke one

She then read the report which gnv.e

Mrs. Murdock gained recognition
and said she had been approached by
Urowmvood parties who wanted the
