The Dallas News some days
since reported that over zuu
carpenters in Dallas are out of
employment. Plenty of build-
ing is going on but all the new
buildings are of stone brick or
concrete. Concrete building is
becoming general and the efforts
of carpenters brick masons and
stone masons to prevent this are
of no avail

KUIs Large Rattle Snake.
Monday morning while Charlie
Wardle who lives near Sidney
was coming to town he discover-
ed a huge rattle snake in the
road near John Sides. Having
no gun he depended upon rocks
for his weapon and after some
time finally succeeded in killing
the reptile. The snake was the
largest ever killed in this part of
the country being five feet long
and larger around than a man's
arm.
Mr. Wardle state that the
shake was very vicious and made
many attempts to strike him. It
attracted no little attention when
displayed on the streets. -Blanket

Jn thedietriot court of Brown
county a deoision that will doubt
less be far-reaching was handed
down last week A farmer of
that county deoided to break
Wall street last year by buying
ootton futures. He gave his note
for SI 700 to the looal exohange
for a block of futures and se-
oured the note with a deed of
trust on a oertain traot of land.
His deal resulted disastrously
and soon his little farm belonged
to the Wall street bears. Some
weeks later the farmer filed suit
lo canoel the note and deed of
trust and last week the distriot
judge held that sinoe purchasing
cotton futures is a species of
gambling the debt incurred was
not collectable by law. This is
the first suit on reoord wnere the
money already oollectedon a debt
was ordered refunded. Doubt

Miles Gets Interested.
The management of the Cen-
tral Texas Fair association of
Brownwood has conceived the
idea of making their next annual
fair a bigger thing than a mere
county affair and have decided
to invite other counties in this
section to join with them. Mc-
Culloch county has accepted
the invitation and has appointed
a committee to represent the
county Other counties have ex-
pressed a willingness to join in
this move.
The Bulletin of that city truly
says "that a real liye fair at
Brownwood would not only ben-
efit Brown county but would be
a great medium for advertising
the entire Central West"
We see this matter exactly like
the Bulletin.and believe Runnels
county should answer the call
and join forces. There is no
doubt in our minds but what an
exhibit pould be easily ar-
ranged and that the benefits to
this county would be great.
If Runnels should see fit to go
into this the Messenger man
can promise the loyal support of
every progressive citizen in this
end of the county. And if the
county as a whole does not look
upon the proposition as the right
thing we are in favor of Miles
and the Miles country taking up
thematter at once. Miles can
with very little exertion secure
an exhibit that would be a credit
to any country and one that
would show the world that we
can deliver the goods when it
comes to an agricultural display.

Walter Beakley came in on the
train Tuesday morning from Big
Springs where he had journeyed
with Colbert Penn and Marvin
White. He says that the country
looks fairly well now as good
rains have fallen but that the
entire country had been very dry
previously and mentions having
seen thousands of acres of land
in the Lipan Flat that was en
tirely bare with the exception of
an occasional sprout from a last
years cotton stalk. Colbert and
Marvin will continue their
journey and search for wives.

Monterey Mex. July 25. '
Whlie riding on horseback to bis
home at Galeana and Arteaga
Streets early this morning from
the Monterey steel plant San-
tiago Gonzales 10 years old was
attacked by several armed men
in a washout through which he
was riding.
The highwaymen came at him
all from one side and the boy
dropped off his horse on the oth-
er and as it was not yet light
succeeded in getting away.
The robbers took the horse
which has not yet been located
in spite of every effort of the
police. f
The boy is a son of Fermin '
Gonzales a merchant who not
ified the police immediately after
being informed of the affair.
The boy is often employed to
carry considerable sums for hia
father and it is supposed that
the bandits thought he was on a
similar errand this time. He
said that the men who attacked
him were four in number and
that at least two of them carried
long knives.
