Enthuiasm that doesn't manifest
itself in some active form of work
doesn't count for very much.
. Brownwood has an oversupply of
procrastis&tors. Too many of our peo-
ple believe in putting off until next
week the things that hatl as well be
do'ne today.
Brownwood can either be a town of
importance or can dwindle into in-
significance according to whether the
people unite on public enterprises or
leave opportunities to pass by without
aftention.

! The papers are poking fun at the
San Antonio Gazette because that pa-
per said that 500000 babies would die
!in the United States this summer as
the result of drinking impure milk.
Perhaps the Gazette writer was esti-
mating the baby supply from his ob-
servations as to the San Antonio crop.
Again and yet asain the Bulletin
desires to call your attention to the
vote on the bond issue on May 29th
which Is next Saturday. In the mean
time make It a point to talk to those
you meet abput the matter and en-
deavor to work up a degree of en-
thusiasm that will carry the bond issue
overwhelmingly.
Abilene withdrew from the contest
for the Baptist sanitarium probably
for the purpose of bending its every
energy to secure the West Texas Nor-
mal. The secret of Abilene's success
is that the business men there are will-
ing to sacrifice both their time and
their '"money for any cause that will
make a greater Abilene. That town
will either secure the Normal or make
some other place sit up and take no-
tice that it is on the map.
Why shouldn't Gov. Campbell scale
the appropriation bill if he can do
so without serious detriment to any
interest of the state? It is an open
secret that many items were placed
State organizer Gaddy of the Retail
Merchants Association made a good
address to the merchants Friday af-
ternoon but lie failed to give any
remedy for offsetting the encroach-
ments of the mail order houses on the
trade-of the retail merchants. Meet-
ings may be held until doomsday and
the mail order men condemned and
called scoundrels until the speakers
grow black in the face but until the
retail merchants profit by the progres-
siveness of the mail order houses and
meet them with strong advertising
facts and bombard them terrifically
with printer's ink the mail order
business will Increase. The trouble
with most merchants is that they do
not pay enough attention to their ad-
vertising and it carries too little force
with it and it Is esteemed by them as
of too little value. In-this day and
time the brain has to be worked to do
a successful business and that applied
to advertising brings the largest re-
sults. With proper attention paid to
this part of the business the mall order
apology for it is the great interest In
the progress of Brownwood.
KEEP YOUR BOYS OF THE
STREETS.
The public schools have closed and
the question with many parents Is
what to do with the boys and girls
during the vacation. Whatever you
do try to keep them busy. Keep them
busy at home if you can or where they
will be under the supervision of some
one you can trust to see that they do
not fall into idle or vicious habits.
Above all things else keep them ofT
the streets. The average boy who is
turned loose in the streets soon be-
comes a past master in the knowledge
of all kinds of vileness and almost in-
variably becomes a confirmed cigarette
smoker. Cigarettes reap deadly poi-
son to the brain of the growing boy
and Incapacitate him for mental devel-
opment The streets are not the place
for boys. They should be at home or
at work. Idleness Is not best for any
one and it is especially trying on the

.
Judging from the speeches the pro-
gramme and the politicians present
well the future will probably tell.
Brownwood is to have some Dallas
commercial visitors for one brief hour
'next week. What a rush these people
must be In that they can only spend
an hour In a city that will one day
rival Dallas in population and busi-
- ries's. They should give us more of
their time.

The. Bulletin wouldn't be surprised
one bit if the Santa Fe doesn't sur-.

says a writer in the Boston Trans-
cript Everybody has seen a kitten
on a street door-step attacked by
a dog ten times her size as
apparently self-possessed as if she
were in her mistress' lap. If
she turns tail and runs down the
street she is lost; the dog will have
a sure advantage of her. Even as
it is if he could get up courage
enough to seize her on the spot he
would be able to make short work of
her.
"You dare not touch me and you
