fou will note that the eminent phy-
sfcans say that filth Is the sole creator
of diseases and the National and local
government is spending large sums of
money annually to prevent diseases
from spreading throughout our land.
lt us take this matter to our own
town and county. This town has
ref ched a point where it is no longer
considered a village and the people
here and elsewhere have great hopes
fo Brownwood and Brown county's
luture and there Is ho one thing that
is so detrimental to a town or people
.asuncleanliness. There is positively
nothing that will disgust a prospect

Yeakim Batter in Demand.
"While in conversation with Mr.
Trousdale he stated that the Yoakum
creamery .butter Is in demand that
we find it Impossible to supply the
market with our butter notwithstand-
ing we are gaining new patrons who
bring their butter fat to the creamery
each week and receive .twenty-six
cents a ponud for it Our butter cus-
tomers are increasing their orders and
it has become necessary for us to cur-
tail every order that comes in order
that we may distribute it to our va-
rious customers. The creamery' has
been selling 6000 pounds of butter a
month and if we could only get the
butter fat we could easily and success
fully dispense twice that amount.
This month they will increase the
amount of butter to about S000
pounds which Is a fine showing and
they expect to have an increase as
sDrinc is cominE and the grass Ini
the pastures Is getting fine and natur-
ally the cows will Increase In milk.
This is enough to prove that there Is
money for those that have a few cows
In patronizing the creamery. An insti
tution of this kind Is of much good to
any town and deserves the patron-
age of the public at large. We hope
tthat there will be more to take an In-

To Make Cloth Water Preof.
Take eight ounces of sugar of lead
eight ounces of powdered alum and
two and one-half gallons of lukewarm
water says Woman's Home Compan-
ion for April. Mix in k tub and let
stand for twenty-four hours. Stir thor-
oughly when first mixed and occa-
sionally for the first hour to dissolve
the ingredients. Take the garment
overcoat suit or dress anything of
woolen or cotton material brush thor-
oughly and let soak for twenty-four
hours. Take out let drip until almost
dry don't wring hang in the air until
dry then press as usual. Water will
fall off as from the proverbial duck's
back. One can use a suit treated in
this way on hunting trips and in a
driving rain and" come home dry. It
does not destroy or interfere with the
ventilation or injure the fabric in the
slightest degree s The quantities as
given here cost about twenty cents
and will successfully water-proof an
overcoat and suit or In proportion.

Commencing on the end ot the con-
vict lease system in Georgia the
Washington Post says the evils of the
system had long been known to the
people of the State but the cruelty
and utter vleloiisness of it as dls- rwl11 stand..
closed by Governor Hoke Smith's In-
vestigation roused vthe public con-
science. Perhaps the investigation of the
penitentiary system in Texas for
which the Thirty-first Legislature has
provided may have a similar effect
and result in forever putting an end
to the farming out of convicts in this
State for the mere purpose of com
mercializing their labor.
In Georgia the convicts were leased
for a mere pittance to men who held
the politicians in their grasp and it
was hard to find legislators with back-
bone enough to oppose the interests of
those who derive profit from the con
vict lease system. In Texas the con
victs have been worked to a consider
able extent on state farms but the
system has been full of evils as dis-
closed by a cursory Inquiry made by a
representative of The Express and by
facts which have leaked out and which
eventuated In the call for an Invest!
Igatlon which is shortly to be made by
a legislative committee.
What Georgia intends to do with
her convicts says the Post Is what
every sate in the Union ought to do
with its prison inmates. Winter and
summer they are to be nut to the
business of making roads. This has
been the contention of The Express
for a long time. It is a policy that
has been pursued with great success
In several of the States which have
profited by It to the extent of many
miles of good roads not before In ex-
istence. As the Post suggests If the
whole great body of a State's male-
factors were put to work on its public
roads the highways in this country
would soon be equal to those of con-
tinental Europe. As It is our public
roads are probably the worst In any
country .on earth.
Some of the convicts must be kept
within the penitentiary walls where
plenty of employment can be found for
them but the shirt term convicts
especially should be put to work on
the public roads where they will have
plenty of healthful outdoor exercise
. ...
ana wnere their services will be of
greatest benefit to the State without'
being brought in competition with'
honest 'labor a consideration that
should have weightSan Antonio
