Women Write Better Mysteries,
Says lady Television Producer
By JOSEPH FINNIGAN
UPI Hollywood Correspondent
— Most
of Alfred Hitchcock's life has
been spent with three women —
his mother, his wife and Joan
Harrison, one of the few lady
television producers.
The blonde and attractive
Miss Harrison has been working
for Hitchcock since she grad-
uated from college in England
25 years ago, her tenure being
interrupted for six years when
she produced pictures independ-
ently.
"I started with Mr. Hitchcock
as a secretary earning $12 a
week," said Miss Harrison, sit-
ting behind a desk at her Revue
Studio office where Hitchcock
films the television series which
bears his name. She's the pro-
ducer.
Miss Harrison functions as an
efficient executive in a man's
world at Revue, but she gives it
a touch of femininity. Her office
is ranked among the most taste-
fully decorated on the lot.
Miss Harrison, the wife of
mystery writer Eric Ambler,
earned screen writing credit
with Hitchcock for the movie
"Rebecca" and her producer's

She has been in Hollywood for
more than 20 years but her voice
still has the accent of her native
England. Talking about her
work on the Hitchcock series
she describes it as a "full time
job."
"It's all day. every day." she
said. "You just can't leave at
1 o'clock because the children
must go to the dentist. Fortu-
nately I have an understanding
husband. He writes at home and
doesn't want me around."
Being a television producer
is unique for a lady, but choos-
ing the mystery flt-ld is even
more unusual. You would ex-
pect a pretty woman such as
Miss Harrison to concern her-
self with ladylike stories in-
stead of Hitchcock-style skull-
duggery.
"That's my early training,"
she said, explaining her choice
of drama. "I went straight from
college to work for Mr. Hitch-
cock and he's always been asso-
ciated with suspense."
There's another reason. Miss I
Harrison has said women are

"Women have been writing
lots of mysteries," she said
"Look at Agatha Christie. I
think women have a talent for
what I call polite murder. I
don't think women are as good
at the hard-hitting type of
murder as men. However, wom-
en put more mystery into mur-
derers in their stories. You
know, the gentle old lady who
does it with a cup of tea and
arsenic.
"I like the approach of some
women writers to a story. They
deal in terms of the normal
family in which something hor-
rible happens. For instance, if
a woman writer is doing a poi-
soning, she'll describe the poi-
soned dish in detail.
"They describe things as part |
of everyday life which gives the;
story contrast. A woman will1
give you more details about
clothes than a man. I like to;
know what the corpse is wear-j
ing."
